Differential Equations, Chaos and Variational Problems

Differential Equations, Chaos and Variational Problems PDF Author: Vasile Staicu
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3764384824
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 436

Book Description
This collection of original articles and surveys written by leading experts in their fields is dedicated to Arrigo Cellina and James A. Yorke on the occasion of their 65th birthday. The volume brings the reader to the border of research in differential equations, a fast evolving branch of mathematics that, besides being a main subject for mathematicians, is one of the mathematical tools most used both by scientists and engineers.

Variational and Free Boundary Problems

Variational and Free Boundary Problems PDF Author: Avner Friedman
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1461383579
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 210

Book Description
This IMA Volume in Mathematics and its Applications VARIATIONAL AND FREE BOUNDARY PROBLEMS is based on the proceedings of a workshop which was an integral part of the 1990- 91 IMA program on "Phase Transitions and Free Boundaries. " The aim of the workshop was to highlight new methods, directions and problems in variational and free boundary theory, with a concentration on novel applications of variational methods to applied problems. We thank R. Fosdick, M. E. Gurtin, W. -M. Ni and L. A. Peletier for organizing the year-long program and, especially, J. Sprock for co-organizing the meeting and co-editing these proceedings. We also take this opportunity to thank the National Science Foundation whose financial support made the workshop possible. Avner Friedman Willard Miller, Jr. PREFACE In a free boundary one seeks to find a solution u to a partial differential equation in a domain, a part r of its boundary of which is unknown. Thus both u and r must be determined. In addition to the standard boundary conditions on the un known domain, an additional condition must be prescribed on the free boundary. A classical example is the Stefan problem of melting of ice; here the temperature sat isfies the heat equation in the water region, and yet this region itself (or rather the ice-water interface) is unknown and must be determined together with the tempera ture within the water. Some free boundary problems lend themselves to variational formulation.

Solving Ordinary and Partial Boundary Value Problems in Science and Engineering

Solving Ordinary and Partial Boundary Value Problems in Science and Engineering PDF Author: Karel Rektorys
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 9780849325526
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 218

Book Description
This book provides an elementary, accessible introduction for engineers and scientists to the concepts of ordinary and partial boundary value problems, acquainting readers with fundamental properties and with efficient methods of constructing solutions or satisfactory approximations. Discussions include: ordinary differential equations classical theory of partial differential equations Laplace and Poisson equations heat equation variational methods of solution of corresponding boundary value problems methods of solution for evolution partial differential equations The author presents special remarks for the mathematical reader, demonstrating the possibility of generalizations of obtained results and showing connections between them. For the non-mathematician, the author provides profound functional-analytical results without proofs and refers the reader to the literature when necessary. Solving Ordinary and Partial Boundary Value Problems in Science and Engineering contains essential functional analytical concepts, explaining its subject without excessive abstraction.

One-dimensional Variational Problems

One-dimensional Variational Problems PDF Author: Giuseppe Buttazzo
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 9780198504658
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 282

Book Description
While easier to solve and accessible to a broader range of students, one-dimensional variational problems and their associated differential equations exhibit many of the same complex behavior of higher-dimensional problems. This book, the first moden introduction, emphasizes direct methods and provides an exceptionally clear view of the underlying theory.

Regular Variation and Differential Equations

Regular Variation and Differential Equations PDF Author: Vojislav Maric
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3540465200
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 141

Book Description
This is the first book offering an application of regular variation to the qualitative theory of differential equations. The notion of regular variation, introduced by Karamata (1930), extended by several scientists, most significantly de Haan (1970), is a powerful tool in studying asymptotics in various branches of analysis and in probability theory. Here, some asymptotic properties (including non-oscillation) of solutions of second order linear and of some non-linear equations are proved by means of a new method that the well-developed theory of regular variation has yielded. A good graduate course both in real analysis and in differential equations suffices for understanding the book.

Multiple Solutions Of Boundary Value Problems: A Variational Approach

Multiple Solutions Of Boundary Value Problems: A Variational Approach PDF Author: John R Graef
Publisher: World Scientific
ISBN: 9814696560
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 290

Book Description
Variational methods and their generalizations have been verified to be useful tools in proving the existence of solutions to a variety of boundary value problems for ordinary, impulsive, and partial differential equations as well as for difference equations. In this monograph, we look at how variational methods can be used in all these settings. In our first chapter, we gather the basic notions and fundamental theorems that will be applied in the remainder of this monograph. While many of these items are easily available in the literature, we gather them here both for the convenience of the reader and for the purpose of making this volume somewhat self-contained. Subsequent chapters deal with the Sturm-Liouville problems, multi-point boundary value problems, problems with impulses, partial differential equations, and difference equations. An extensive bibliography is also included.
