For several reasons, mostly inherent to the different developments of generative grammar, an increasing number of publications have dealt with reduplication in the past 20 years. Reduplication lends itself perfectly as a test field for theories that opt for a non-segmental organization of phonology and morphology. As it happens frequently, then, the discussion centers around a rather small set of data for which alternative analysis are offered, and which themselves are intended to contribute to the foundation of new theoretical developments. The present volume (which goes back to a conference on reduplication at the University of Graz, Austria) offers a broader approach to reduplication not only from different theoretical viewpoints, but especially for its phenomenology. Across theories a number of highly qualified authors deal with formal and functional perspectives, with typological properties, with semantics, comparative issues, the role of reduplication in language acquisition, the acquisition of reduplicative systems, sign languages, creoles and pidgins, general grammatical and cognitive principles; the picture is completed by a series of language or language-family specific studies as on Uto-Aztecan, Salish, Tupi-Guarani, Moroccan and Cairene Arabic, various African languages, Chinese, Turkish, Indo-European, languages from India, etc. The overall scope of the conference was to contribute to a new level of discussion of the phenomenon, across theories and across specializations and interests. "The topic of this dissertation is morphological reduplication in Sign Language of the Netherlands (Nederlandse Gebarentaal, NGT). Under reduplication, (part of) a word or sign is repeated, in order to yield a systematic change in meaning. The present study focuses on three of its functions: nominal pluralization, aspect marking, and reciprocal marking. Analysis of naturalistic corpus data is combined with data elicitation.The findings reveal that, for all three investigated functions, different types of reduplication alternate with zero marking, and that the choice between strategies is influenced by the phonological make-up of the base sign. Moreover, for both aspect and reciprocals, meaning differences are expressed by different reduplication types. Finally, morphosyntactic verb type plays a role in the choice of reciprocal marking strategy. Interestingly, reduplication appears to be optional across functions.Beyond offering a description of NGT reduplication, this book presents a typological perspective on the phenomenon. A comparison of the present results to findings from previous research on other signed and spoken languages reveals cross-linguistic patterns as well as variation. Moreover, the study shows, once more, that reduplication comes with a modality-specific flavor.Finally, the dissertation presents a theoretical perspective by offering a formalization of the results in stochastic Optimality Theory (OT). Again, modality of signal transmission turns out to play a role. Given that universality is a hallmark of OT-constraints, we aim to employ modality-independent constraint types. Still, some constraints necessarily refer to modality-specific phonological features. This raises the question to what extent OT-constraints can be truly universal."--

An original and comprehensive approach to reduplication, with extensive examples and case studies in many languages. A convincing account of reduplicative phenomena has been a longstanding problem for rule-based theories of morphophonology. Many scholars believe that derivational phonology is incapable in principle of analyzing reduplication. In Distributed Reduplication, John Frampton demonstrates the adequacy of rule-based theories by providing a general account within that framework and illustrating his proposal with extensive examples of widely varying reduplicatation schemes from many languages. His analysis is based on new proposals about the structure of autosegmental representations.Although Frampton offers many new ideas about the computations that are put to use in reduplicative phonology, some fairly radical, his intent is conservative: to provide evidence that the model of the phonological computation developed by Chomsky and Halle in 1968 is fundamentally correct—that surface forms are produced by the successive modification of underlying forms. Frampton's theory accounts for the surface properties of reduplicative morphemes by operations that are distributed at various points in the morphophonology rather than by a single operation applied at a single point. Lexical insertion, prosodic adjustment, and copying can each make a contribution to the output at different points in the computation of surface form.Frampton discusses particular reduplicative processes in many languages as he develops his general theory. The final chapter provides an extensive sequence of detailed case studies. Appendixes offer additional material on the No Crossing Constraint, the autosegmental structure of reduplicative representations, linearization, and concatenative versus nonconcatenative morphology.
