Book Description
Excerpt from A Treatise on the Theory of Friction The Theory of Friction, considered as a part of Rational Mechanics, has hardly received the attention which it deserves. Even in the most complete systematic treatises, the space accorded to its discussion is small, compared with that bestowed upon questions in which the hypothesis of perfect smoothness has been assumed as the basis of the investigation. And it seems probable that many students have been led to regard the discussion of this force, less as a part of Rational Mechanics, than as a correction to be applied before the investigations of that science can be made practically useful. Such an idea, if it exist, is a complete mistake. The theory of friction is as truly a part of Rational Mechanics as the theory of gravitation. The force with which this theory is concerned is subject to laws as definite, and as fully susceptible of mathematical expression, as the force of gravity. And even if the imperfection of our analysis should render impossible the actual solution of the problems which are presented to us in this theory, such an imperfection, which is purely mathematical, cannot affect the right of the theory itself to be considered as a part of Rational Mechanics. Neither is this right affected, even if it be shown that the laws usually assigned to the force of friction are not mathematically true for any known substance. Book Description
Excerpt from A Treatise on Friction and Lost Work: In Machinery and Millwork The following pages contain the results of an attempt to exhibit the facts and laws involved in the waste of energy by friction in machinery and mill-work. It is readily seen that in all well-designed machinery friction is the sole cause of lost work. The other possible cause, the permanent deformation of parts, cannot in such cases exist: every piece which is altered in shape by the forces received and transmitted, since it is never sprung beyond the elastic limit, restores by its restoration of form all energy expended in its alteration. Hence, the study of the methods and magnitudes of frictionlosses, and the laws governing their production, is, next to the theory of pure mechanism, the most important study in relation to the transmission of energy by machinery. In the endeavor to reconcile the facts of common experience with the data supplied by the working library of the engineer, and in the attempt to secure additional essential experimental data relating to lubricated surfaces, the Author was led into a series of investigations which revealed new facts and established the inapplicability of the usually received values of the coefficients of friction to much of the most familiar work of the engineer. The enormous variations observed in their values, as produced by change of pressure, of speed, and of temperature, and revealed by such investigations, compelled the Author to devise new apparatus and new methods of experiment, and finally led to the accumulation of a large mass of new and practically applicable data, the most important of which may be found here published.
