Book Description
Excerpt from A Treatise on Materia Medica, (Including Therapeutics and Toxicology), Vol. 3 Experience has shown that the form under which bitter principles are given has a great influence upon the effect. The best form is that of the cold infusion; the next best the extract. The tinctures are very good in some cases where the condition of the stomach does not prohibit the use of alcohol. The decoction is less effective than the cold infusion; the worst form is that of the powder. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from A Treatise on Materia Medica, (Including Therapeutics and Toxicology), Vol. 1 The third edition of this work was published in 1877. It was in this edition that the work which had previously been edited alone by Dr. Nothnagel, received the aid of Dr. Rossbach. It was the latter who devised and executed the present mode of classification and to whom the care of the physiological action and chemical relations of the drugs was assigned, while Dr. Nothnagel assumed charge of the therapeutics, the toxicology and the preparation of the drugs. The authors in the preface to their third edition enter into the following explanations. "Wherever chemistry has made known the essential active ingredient of a drug, this has received prominence, while drugs which were correlated but whose active principles were as yet unknown were treated of in the Appendix." "Modern chemical and botanical names were everywhere selected." "The determination to abandon old method of arranging the classification upon the basis of the physiological or therapeutical action of drugs was adopted, because of the widely different physiological and the therapeutical effects which so many drugs have upon the different systems of the body and in varying diseased states." "In our classification, which rests pre-eminently upon a chemical basis, we have sought to portray the present status of our scientific knowledge, even in its weak points. It will be demonstrated we hope that the chemical grouping of drugs is at the same time the best possible physiological classification; our insight into the physiological action of drugs has advanced sufficiently far to furnish us with guides to a narrower classification, in cases where our chemical knowledge is deficient; but in these cases our arrangement depends nor upon the similarity of action in respect to a single organ, but upon the effects produced upon all the organs of the body." Book Description
Excerpt from A Treatise on Materia Medica, Vol. 2: Including Therapeutics and Toxicology The injurious effects of small quantities of acid upon the body and the individual organs have been to some extent much exaggerated and inaccurately described. Under any circumstances these acids must be used forav'ery long time before any ill effects appear. These are said to be (for in stance after the excessive and long-continued use of food pre pared With vinegar) a wasting of the body, anaemia, and paleness of the skin; they are said to depend upon the di minished alkalescence of the blood and the destruction of the red blood -globules. In discussing the alkalies, we spoke of the probable importance of the alkalies to the normal processes of life, and cannot, therefore, deny that the above symptoms may be due to the diminished alkalinity of the blood and body; but we must insist that there is no positive proof that wasting and anaemia are due to this cause. As to the destruction of the red blood corpuscles it is positive that this has been observed in acute sulphuric -acid poison ing; it can also be seen by mixing blood directly with acids; but, from such coarse experiments we cannot draw any conclusions upon the effect of dietetic doses. As far as acetic acid is concerned, a direct proof that this has any de structive effect upon the blood-globules has not been shown. We therefore, for the present, think it best if we account for the thinness and anaemia simply by disturbances of digestion and nutrition; these are the only necessary results of too long and excessive use of the acids. Whether tuber culosis, as has been affirmed, occurs more often in the vine gar aniline than in other forms of anaemia, is also questionfi able. Book Description
Excerpt from A Treatise of Therapeutics: Comprising Materia Medica and Toxicology, With Special Reference to the Application of the Physiological Action of Drugs to Clinical Medicine Although pharmacy, or the science of preparing medicines, is entirely distinct from therapeutics, or the science of the application of medicines to the cure of disease, it is evident that some acquaintance with the former is necessary to the correct appreciation of the latter. Further, as the basis of both these studies, must first come a knowledge of materia medica, or the substances used as medicines. Pharmacology is the general term em ployed to embrace these three divisions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from A Practical Treatise on Materia Medica and Therapeutics In describing the physiological action of drugs, two methods may be pursued: to present in chronological order a summary of the Opinions of various authorities on the subject in question; or, to condense in a connected description that view of the subject which seems to the author most consonant with all the facts. I have adapted the latter plan, from a conviction of its advantages for the student, and of its utility for the practitioner. The authorities which I have utilized in making up my opinions are placed at the end of each article, in order to avoid interruptions in the methodical descriptions.
