Book Description
Excerpt from A Treatise on Light This book is intended for students who have been through a first year's physics course and who are proceeding further with the study of light. It differs from other books on light by a more systematic treatment, also by dealing with the full s00pe of the subject and including the results of recent investigations. A good knowledge of elementary mathematics is assumed. The calculus is used, but I hope that the results Obtained by its aid will be intelligible to those who cannot follow the inter mediate steps, and in any case the greater part of the book is free from it. Of the 328 figures more than '270 have been specially drawn for the book. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Theory of Light, Vol. 1 of 3 PDF Author: Richard C. Maclaurin

Book Description
Excerpt from The Theory of Light, Vol. 1 of 3: A Treatise on Physical Optics A special feature of the work is the careful comparison between theory and experiment at every stage. From our standpoint as to the aim of science, such a comparison appears all-important. The one difficulty in this matter has been to get access to the most accurate and recent experimental results; a difficulty arising entirely from the present isolation of the writer. At the ends of the earth there are no great libraries to which to refer, and the procuring of material from 'home' is tedious and uncertain. In dealing with experimental results I have deliberately refrained from entering upon descriptions of the methods of experiment as, in my judgment, quite out of place in such a work as this. Photo Lighting

Photo Lighting PDF Author: Felix Raymer

Pages : 130

Book Description
Excerpt from Photo Lighting: A Treatise on Light and Its Effect Under the Skylight, Including Chapters on Skylight and Skylight Construction, Window Lighting and Dark Room Work Frequently we have been requested by mail to give our method or rule for making the different lightings, as we have practiced them for years past. This, we feel sure, our readers will understand is a very difficult thing to do. It is a difficult matter to lay down a rule for lighting a face, and it is especially hard to put one's ideas into writing, so that all may understand just what the writer wishes to convey. Where we have our audience in front of us, and have the use of a skylight and a subject to demonstrate on, it is much easier, as we can then point out the different phases of lighting in a way that the on-looker may see for himself, just the effect we are striving for. Again there is the problem of pleasing all operators. There are no two that can agree on all things, and few that will agree on anything; and yet we are all working toward the same end - to secure a perfect negative. In many, many cases where two operators are at loggerheads, as to their methods, after the plates are developed from each, the work from one can not be distinguished from the other, and yet these men may be calling each other anything but pet names. We all, of course, think we are right, and it may be that we are all right. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Opticks: Or, a Treatise of the Reflections, Refractions, Inflections and Colours of Light These matters, I have hitherto delayed the printing, and should still have delayed it, had not the Importunity of friends prevailed upon me. If any other Papers writ on this Subject are got out of my Hands they are imperfect, and were perhaps written before I had tried all the Experiments here set down, and fully satisfied myself about the Laws of Refractions and Composition of Colours. I have here publish'd what I think proper to come abroad, wishing that it may not be translated into another Language without my Consent. Book Description
Excerpt from An Introductory Treatise on the Nature and Properties of Light, and on Optical Instruments More than two thousand years have passed away since Aristotle, the earliest writer on Optics, whose Treatise has outlived the ravage of time, penned his unsuccessful paper. About fifty years after the celebrated Euclid wrote his in which he maintains that, "Visual rays issue from the eyes in diverging right lines, so as to form a pyramid, or cone, whose vertex is in the eye, and whose base encircles the object we contemplate." In 218, B. C., Archimides flourished; and a few years afterwards Ptolemy Euergetes fixed his great mirror on the tower of the Pharos at Alexandria. In the twelfth century, the celebrated Arabian Philosopher wrote his Treatise; afterwards published under the title of Thesaurus Opticae; and during the three following centuries arose Bacon, Porta, Maurolicus and Kepler. The seventeenth century produced Antonio de Dominis, Harriot, Boyle, Hooke, Grimaldi, Leibnitz, Barrow, - and the pride of England, Sir Isaac Newton.
