Excerpt from A Treatise on Diseases of the Rectum, Anus, and Sigmoid Flexure I have written this book because of a desire to record my individual experience of fifteen years as a rectal specialist, in answer to the demand of my students and friends. Dur ing this time I have learned that many things that are taught are not true, and that many true things have not been taught. I have therefore not taken other men's opinions as my guide, but have accepted as truths only those things which could be substantiated by fact, and here recorded them. In difiering from others on any special point I have tried first to state fairly and fully their views, and then my own. The verdict is left to the reader. I have introduced several chapters which are new to books on this subject. Among these will be found the following: Disease in the Sigmoid Flexure, The Hysterical or Nervous Rectum, Anatomy of the Rec tum in Relation to the Reflexes, Antiseptics in Rectal Surgery, A New Operation for Fistula in Auo.
