The book gives a comprehensive description of the mechanical response of soils (granular and cohesive materials) under cyclic loading. It provides the geotechnical engineer with the theoretical and analytical tools necessary for the evaluation of settlements developng with time under cyclic, einvironmentally idncued loads (such as wave motion, wind actions, water table level variation) and their consequences for the serviceability and durability of structures such as the shallow or deep foundations used in offshore engineering, caisson beakwaters, ballast and airport pavements and also to interpret monitoring data, obtained from both natural and artificial slopes and earth embankments, for the purposes of risk assessment and mitigation.

A Summary of the Prevost Effective Stress Soil Model
Author: John M. Ferritto
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Earthquake engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 114
Book Description
In the Prevost effective stress soil model, soil is viewed as a multi-phase medium consisting of an inelastic porous skeleton and viscous fluids. The model is a general analytical that describes the nonlinear, anisotropic, elasto-plastic, stress and strain dependent, and strength properties of the skeleton when subjected to a three-dimensional loading. This report presents a summary of the Prevost model. A summary of the model formulation is given with its implementation into the DYNAFLOW finite element code. Test data are compared with code prediction. Several boundary value problems are solved as a demonstration of capability.

Evaluation of a Three-dimensional Stress Cell for Granular Soils
Author: T. K. Lew
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 74
Book Description
The study presents the results of tests of rigid, solid, spherical, three-dimensional stress cells for measuring the complete state of stress at a point in a soil field under static or dynamic loading. In addition, a theory is presented for defining the behavior of a spherical stress cell embedded in nonlinear materials. The test results indicate that the stress cells are excellent for making static measurements in sand but that their adequacy for dynamic measurements requires further evaluation. (Author).

The Development of a Three-dimensional Stress Cell for Granular Soils
Author: T. K. Lew
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 52
Book Description
The study presents the results of preliminary tests on a three-dimensional soil stress cell. The results indicate that: (1) The hydrostatic response is linear fr stress up to 3000 psi. (2) The cell requires no calibration. (3) Its response is insensitive to variations in soil stiffness. (4) Its dynamic response closely follows the decay of the overpressure pulse. (5) With a few exceptions, the measured stresses computed from the stress cell data and corresponding stresses in the soil are within 10 percent absolute. More extensive testing and evaluation is required before the stress cell developed can be used with complete confidence. (Author).
