For Rahimi, exile is discussed by the protagonist on several levels: the chance meeting with the soldiers establishes the first stepping stone of Farhads journey to internal exile and, ultimately, to self-discovery, another is based on his exile from religion, and one based on the actual exile from the homeland; which, from a Kristevan point of view, results in the abjection of the self, thus in turn leading to its fragmentation. This particular fragmentation merges with the other parts of the self—the people who Farhad meets in the novel—thus constructing an assemblage marked by misery, remembrance, and eventually hope achieving a different more resistant identity—though carries scars of a broken down image of the past—it can lead to a start of a new life.
