Book Description
Excerpt from A Teachers Manual for the Use of the Binet-Simon Scale of Intelligence The binet-simon scale for intelligence testing has now passed its first days of hesitant uncertainty. In spite of doubt and controversy it has commended itself to a large number of earnest students of childhood as altogether the most adequate measuring rod of intelligence so far devised. That the scale is perfect no one pretends. It is, however, noteworthy that those who have used it most extensively are, on the whole, its most ardent defenders. That it will in the course of time be amended and developed is highly probable. In fact, the earnest enthusiasm of the splendid group of workers now active in this field, both in America and abroad, gives assurance that this development will be both early and sound. In the meantime it remains undoubtedly true that the scale as at present constituted is our most available and reliable guide in distinguishing the normal from both the subnormal and the exceptional child, in determining the various degrees of natural endowment, and in reaching final judgment in many complicated phases of juvenile life. The teacher, the parent, the social worker and the juvenile court Should find in this scale an invaluable instrument for the solution of many a complex problem. The Measurement of Intelligence

The Measurement of Intelligence PDF Author: Lewis Madison Terman
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Psychology
Languages : en
Pages : 380

Book Description
The constant and growing use of the Binet-Simon intelligence scale in public schools, institutions for defectives, reform schools, juvenile courts, and police courts is sufficient evidence of the intrinsic worth of the method. It is generally recognized, however, that the serviceableness of the scale has hitherto been seriously limited, both by the lack of a sufficiently detailed guide and by a number of recognized imperfections in the scale itself. The Stanford revision and extension has been worked out for the purpose of correcting as many as possible of these imperfections, and it is here presented with a rather minute description of the method as a whole and of the individual tests. The aim has been to present the explanations and instructions so clearly and in such an untechnical form as to make the book of use, not only to the psychologist, but also to the rank and file of teachers, physicians, and social workers. More particularly, it is designed as a text for use in normal schools, colleges, and teachers' reading-circles. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2004 APA, all rights reserved).

Book Description
Excerpt from Condensed Guide for the Stanford Revision of the Binet-Simon Intelligence Tests Since the appearance of'the Stanford Revision of the binet-simon In telligence Scaled have been frequently urged to prepare a Condensed guide which would make the application of the tests easier and more convenient. I have hesitated somewhat to act upon this suggestion because I have not wished to encourage the use of the scale without the supplementary directions and explanations which are set forth in the original text of the Stanford Revision.1 The demand has become so insistent, however, that I have decided to heed it. I have been led to this decision largely by the fact that my revision is now so generally used by examiners who are sufficiently experienced to be trusted to follow the correct procedure without the necessity Of constantly con-1 sulting the complete text. Those who are thoroughly familiar with the contents of the latter will find the Condensed Guide a convenient help. It is impossible, however, to warn the inexperienced examiner too emphatically against the dangers inherent in the routine application of mental tests without some knowledge of their derivation, meaning, and purpose. The necessary psychological background for the use of the Binet scale I have tried to supply in The Measurement of Intelligence, and in The Intelligence of School Children I have explained the practical uses of mental tests in the grading and classification of school 'children. It is only as a supplement to these books that the procedure of the' Stanford Revision is here presented in abbreviated form.
