Book Description
At the time I wrote this story in 1987, the Houston Astrodome was a fully functioning, vibrant sports arena. It was the first domed stadium and sometimes dubbed the “eighth wonder of the world”. It was the home of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo and also the Houston Astros baseball team and the Houston Oilers football team (as they were then called). When I chose the Astrodome as Nick’s home in the story, I remember thinking that it was a ludicrous idea that the Dome could ever be empty and available. I even thought that was more unbelievable than a person who could be as tall as his age! But at this time in 2014, the Astrodome stands empty and is the subject of many local arguments and speculation over what its fate should be-demolition or repurposed facility. Who knows what will happen?

Texas Tales Your Teacher Never Told You
Author: C. F. Eckhardt
Publisher: Taylor Trade Publications
ISBN: 1461625416
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 225
Book Description
Cold facts and impersonal statistics may be the bacon of Texas history, but the tall tales and interesting side stories are the sizzle. In this book, C.F. Charlie Eckhardt presents some of the Texas history sizzle that is often ignored when pure historians write about the Lone Star State. He adds to the flavor of Texas history with tales about such things as the first Texas revolution, the first English speaking person in Texas, and the little known counterrevolution of 1838-1840. Charlie examines the expulsion of the Cherokees from Texas and provides details of some of the more famous Indian fights. Charlie also shows his romantic side with the legend of the famous Yellow Rose of Texas.

Publisher: Knopf Books for Young Readers
ISBN: 0307982599
Category : Juvenile Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 134
Book Description
The perfect addition to every family’s home library and just right for sharing aloud, American Tall Tales introduces readers to America’s first folk heroes in nine wildly exaggerated and downright funny stories. Here are Paul Bunyan, that king-sized lumberjack who could fell “ten white pines with a single swing”; John Henry, with his mighty hammer; Mose, old New York’s biggest, bravest fireman; Sally Ann Thunder Ann Whirlwind, who could “outgrin, outsnort, outrun, outlift, outsneeze, outsleep, outlie any varmint”; and other uniquely American characters, together in one superb collection. In the tradition of the original nineteenth-century storytellers, Mary Pope Osborne compiles, edits, and adds her own two cents’ worth—and also supplies fascinating historical headnotes. Michael McCurdy’s robust colored wood engravings recall an earlier time, perfectly capturing all the vitality of the men and women who carved a new country out of the North American wilderness.
