Book Description
Excerpt from A System of Surgery, Vol. 1 of 3: Translated From the German, and Accompanied With Additional Notes and Observations My first object in undertaking this task was to render Surgeons in this country more conversant with foreign practice than they had hitherto been. French Surgery, with its showy, but sometimes too hazardous operations, had indeed been pretty well known among us ever since the peace of 1815, soon after which, medical students, with other British visiters, flocked in crowds to the French capital. But of the Surgery of the German Schools very little had been known in England until within the last few years, no standard German book having appeared in English since the publication of heister's valuable work a century ago. Book Description
Excerpt from A System of Surgery, Vol. 1 of 2: Pathological, Diagnostic, Therapeutic and Operative The favor with which the work has been received is sufficiently attested by the rapid exhaustion of four large editions, by its translation into the Dutch language, and by the universal commendation bestowed upon it by the periodical press, both at home and abroad. This evidence, so gratifying to my feelings as an author, instead of abating my ardor, has only served to stimulate me to increased exertion to render the work still more useful as a faithful exponent of the existing state of the art and science of surgery. Upon the edition now issued upwards of five years of arduous labor have been expended. Every chapter has been thoroughly revised; the text has been augmented by an amount of matter fully equal to four hundred and fifty pages; and numerous new woodcuts, nearly all expressly prepared for the purpose, have been introduced. Many portions have been* entirely rewritten, and every effort has been made to condense the language; while an enlargement in the form of the work has prevented any considerable increase in the number of pages. The general arrangement is the same as in the previous imprints; and the additions, for the most part widely scattered through the text, are essentially of a practical character. Book Description
Excerpt from The Principles and Practice of Surgery, Vol. 1: Being a Treatise on Surgical Diseases and Injuries The present volume is the first part of a work on the Principles and Practice of Surgery. For a quarter of a century I have been unceasingly occupied with the study of anatomy and surgery, and during most of that time have been actively engaged, as a public instructor, in communicating the great teach ings of these closely-allied branches, in the hospitals of Philadelphia and in the halls of the University of Pennsylvania, to thousands of young men from all parts of the United States and to many from foreign countries. Most of the pages have been written, not in what may be termed moments of leisure, but during the hours of the night, - hours stolen from the time usually allotted to the repose of body and mind, and after the daily labors of an exacting public and private practice.
