Though it is claimed that syphilis depends essentially upon a micro-organism for its virulence, and though its analogy with other chronic infecting granulation-tissue diseases, notably leprosy, supports that View, we are not to-day in the possession of a definite knowledge of any microbe which has been shown either by circumstantial evidence or experimental inoculation to be capable of producing the disease. There are two well-marked forms of syphilis - the acquired disease, Obtained by contact with a previous syphilitic and the hereditary form, in which the infection has been transmitted from one or both parents to the offspring.
