Workshop on Cumulative Environmental Effects Assessment and Monitoring on the Grand Banks and Scotian Shelf

Workshop on Cumulative Environmental Effects Assessment and Monitoring on the Grand Banks and Scotian Shelf PDF Author: Environmental Studies Research Funds (Canada)
Publisher: [Calgary] : Environmental Studies Research Funds
ISBN:
Category : Environmental monitoring
Languages : en
Pages : 78

Book Description
This publication summarizes proceedings of a workshop initiated in response to recommendations from the 1997 Terra Nova Environmental Assessment Panel on the need to address cumulative effects of offshore oil & gas development. Topics of presentations include the east coast offshore context of hydrocarbon development, prediction & verification of offshore oil & gas effects, cumulative effects assessment & monitoring approaches, lessons from cumulative effects assessment & monitoring in the Gulf of Mexico and North Sea, designing cumulative effects monitoring programs, the potential for cumulative effects off the east coast, contributors to offshore cumulative effects, how cumulative effects should be monitored, and who should do the assessment & monitoring. The appendix includes an excerpt from the Terra Nova Panel report.

Social and Economic Issues in Atlantic Canada Concerning Offshore Oil and Gas Activities

Social and Economic Issues in Atlantic Canada Concerning Offshore Oil and Gas Activities PDF Author: Cleland, Dunsmuir Consulting Limited
Publisher: Ottawa, Ont. : Environmental Studies Revolving Funds
ISBN:
Category : Hibernia Oil Field Economic aspects
Languages : en
Pages : 120

Book Description
Oil and gas industry operations on Canada's east coast take place in waters that have supported a fishing industry for centuries. The potential for conflict between these industries on the Scotian Shelf and the Grand Banks of Newfoundland takes three forms: competition for ocean space, interference with vessel operations arising from gear and equipment conflicts, and damage to bottom-founded structures.

Includes subject index.

Produced Water

Produced Water PDF Author: Kenneth Lee
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1461400465
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 601

Book Description
A state-of-the-art review of scientific knowledge on the environmental risk of ocean discharge of produced water and advances in mitigation technologies. In offshore oil and gas operations, produced water (the water produced with oil or gas from a well) accounts for the largest waste stream (in terms of volume discharged). Its discharge is continuous during oil and gas production and typically increases in volume over the lifetime of an offshore production platform. Produced water discharge as waste into the ocean has become an environmental concern because of its potential contaminant content. Environmental risk assessments of ocean discharge of produced water have yielded different results. For example, several laboratory and field studies have shown that significant acute toxic effects cannot be detected beyond the "point of discharge" due to rapid dilution in the receiving waters. However, there is some preliminary evidence of chronic sub-lethal impacts in biota associated with the discharge of produced water from oil and gas fields within the North Sea. As the composition and concentration of potential produced water contaminants may vary from one geologic formation to another, this conference also highlights the results of recent studies in Atlantic Canada.

The ever increasing interest in work in oceanography and marine biology and its relevance to global environmental issues, especially global climate change and its impacts, creates a demand for authoritative reviews summarizing the results of recent research. OMBAR has catered to this demand since its foundation more than 50 years ago. Following the favourable reception and complimentary reviews accorded to all the volumes, Volume 56 continues to regard the marine sciences—with all their various aspects—as a unity. Physical, chemical, and biological aspects of marine science are dealt with by experts actively engaged in these fields, and every chapter is peer-reviewed by other experts working actively in the specific areas of interest. The series is an essential reference text for researchers and students in all fields of marine science and related subjects, and it finds a place in libraries of universities, marine laboratories, research institutes and government departments.
