One prehistoric site (23 DU 167) was identified on the extreme northwestern edge of the project right-of-way for the bridge at mile 8.75. The tests conducted indicate that site 23DUI67 is of at least regional significance. It was recommended that construction activities for the bridge at mile 8.75 be adjusted as necessary to completely avoid site 23DU167.

All six sites are ceramic scatters in a context extensively disturbed by agricultural or other activity. No features were observed in association with any of the sites.

Book Description
An intensive survey for prehistoric, historic, and architectural properties within the Ditch 19 Channel Enlargement Project, Item I, Parcel 2 and Item 2, located in Dunklin County, Missouri was conducted during April, May, June, and July, 1978. The study methods included a review of published literature, a review of county, state, and federal archival sources, a cartographic review, interviews with local informants, field examination, and archaeological analysis of artifact collections. A total of 57 sites were identified during the field examination but four were determined to be completely outside the project right-of-way after careful examination. The cultural properties inventoried include prehistoric sites dating from the Paleo-Indian, Archaic, Woodland, and Mississippian Periods. The historic properties include a large number of 20th century sites of various types with one of the historic properties tentatively dated as early as the late 19th century. The architectural properties include rural agricultural structures and domestic units. Eight sites are considered eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places. Adverse project impacts on six of these sites can be avoided by modification of the project design. Two sites which have been assessed as eligible for the National Register have already been impacted by prior ditch construction, and further channel enlargement in the vicinity of those sites should be delayed until an archaeological salvage and preservation program can be implemented.

Book Description
On February 4, 1986, Mid-Continental Research Associates contracted with the Memphis District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to conduct a cultural resource survey along Belle Fountain Ditch located in Pemiscot and Dunklin Counties, Missouri. The investigations described in this report focus on the survey of the project area on the north and south side of Belle Fountain Ditch. The survey methods, (pedestrian survey with shovel tests where visibility was less than 75%), used for each side are described. No cultural resources were located in the project area during the course of the survey, nor were there any previously recorded archeological sites in the project area. Analysis of the soils and previous work in the project area indicate that this is a low probability area for archeological clearance/no further archeological work is made.

Book Description
An intensive survey for prehistoric, historic and architectural resources within the Upper Buffalo Creek Ditch Enlargement PRoject area in northwestern Mississippi County, Arkansas, and southern Dunklin County, Missouri, was conducted in June and July 1979. Study methods included a review of published literature, a review of county, state and Federal archival sources, a cartographic review, interviews with local informants, intensive field examination, and archaeological analysis of artifact collections. A total of 21 sites was inventoried during the survey, two of which were determined to be outside of the project right-of-way. Fifteen sites exhibited prehistoric components, including Late Archaic, Woodland, and Mississipian occupations. Five sites exhibited historic components and three contained architectural components. All of the historic sites appear to be associated with the late 19th and early 20th century. The three architectural sites are related to 20 th century agricultural practices. Two prehistoric sites are considered potentially eligible for inclusion in the National Register of historic Places. Options for the mitigation of adverse effects on these sites include avoidance of the sites during construction, in-situ preservation, and archaeological data recovery.
