Book Description
This research used the self perceptions of both Mainland Chinese students and International Student Services Office (ISSO) staff to identify key support programs and services needed to achieve best practices that can be applied to creating an effective system to help international students acclimate to American campuses. This research study surveyed 217 Mainland Chinese students and 35 International Student Services Office staff from 14 selected colleges and universities in the Midwestern state of Illinois. This study compared the perceptions of Mainland Chinese students and those of ISSO staff about the adjustment problems Mainland Chinese students encountered in the process of their acculturation into American colleges and universities. Its findings revealed some differences in the respective perceptions concerning the effectiveness of ESL language support programs, extracurricular activities, academic advising, Chinese students helping out and cultural visits to local areas.

After three years of residential work in American graduate schools and the contacts he had with many of his fellow students, the writer asked himself the question: To what extent are the problems arising from the adjustments which the Chinese students have to make in American institutions similar and to what extent different from his own, and, how are they attempt ing to solve them! Book Description
International students come to the United States with different cultural, social, and linguistic backgrounds. The disparity between the American culture and the foreign student s culture is large enough to cause serious adaptation problems. This book investigated the academic, personal, and social adjustment problems encountered by Chinese students attending different types of universities in the United States of America. Differences among students by campus were examined by age, length of stay, marital status, gender, financial situation, language proficiency, and academic achievement. The adjustment problems faced by Chinese students arel also encounted by international students from other countries. The identification and analysis of these adjustment problems will help international students alleviate their culture shock and shorten their adaptation process
