Book Description
This paper establishes a finite element method (FEM) model to predict rutting development of a double-layered pavement system with stone mastic asphalt as its upper layer and mastic asphalt as its bottom layer, which is widely used in orthotropic steel bridge paving. In addition, it presents the influence of pavement thickness and overloading on rutting occurring in the pavement of an orthotropic steel bridge. The results show that the MA layer contributes to an overwhelming majority of permanent deformation; furthermore, within a certain range, rutting depth increases rapidly with the rise of pavement thickness. Finally, a circular road tracking test was conducted to verify the FEM prediction. The comparison between test results and FEM results shows that the model is accurate. The results of this study can be used as reference for the design of pavement on steel decks.

Study of the Strain Response of Asphalt Pavements on Orthotropic Steel Bridge Decks Through Field Testing and Numerical Simulation PDF Author: Guodong Zeng

Book Description
A composite structural system consisting of an orthotropic steel bridge deck, waterproof prime, binding course, and wearing surface is complicated. To simplify the analysis of such systems, general elastic and continuous structure theory is applied to the asphalt pavement on steel bridge decks to determine the magnitude of the strain. Large differences in mechanical results have been previously obtained in assessments of steel bridge deck pavements. Few studies have focused on the mechanical state and time-dependent response of a realistic steel bridge deck wearing surface because of the difficulty of measuring the strain of the pavement on a steel deck of a long-span bridge that is in service. This study performed static and dynamic loading tests on an actual long-span steel bridge and analyzed the characteristics of the time-dependent strain response of the bridge deck wearing surface. The results demonstrate that the asphalt wearing surface exhibited significant loading time and rate-dependent characteristics under both static and dynamic loading conditions. The test analysis results also revealed that the axle load, vehicle speed, and longitudinal slope of the bridge had significant effects on the mechanical responses of the bridge deck wearing surface. Based on a comparison between the finite element numerical simulation results and the measurements obtained from testing the actual bridge, the magnitudes of the mechanical strain responses of the wearing surface on a steel bridge deck under the dynamic wheel load of a vehicle were analyzed assuming that the wearing surface is elastic and that the elastic modulus can be determined from a four-point bending test. However, the cumulative effect of plastic deformation must be considered when analyzing the fatigue damage of a permanent wearing surface.

Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 572

Book Description
Functional Pavements is a collection of papers presented at the 6th Chinese-European Workshop (CEW) on Functional Pavement Design (Nanjing, China, October 18-21, 2020). The focus of the CEW series is on field tests, laboratory test methods and advanced analysis techniques, and cover analysis, material development and production, experimental characterization, design and construction of pavements. The main areas covered by the book include: • Asphalt binders for flexible pavements • Asphalt mixture evaluation and performance • Pavement construction and maintenance • Pavement Surface Properties and Vehicle Interaction • Cementitious materials for rigid pavements • Pavement geotechnics and environment Functional Pavements aims at contributing to the establishment of a new generation of pavement design methodologies in which rational mechanics principles, advanced constitutive models and advanced material characterization techniques shall constitute the backbone of the design process. The book will be much of interest to professionals, academics and practitioners in pavement engineering and related disciplines as it should assist them in providing improved road pavement infrastructure to their stakeholders.

Significant Findings from Full-scale Accelerated Pavement Testing

Significant Findings from Full-scale Accelerated Pavement Testing PDF Author: Wynand JvdM. Steyn
Publisher: Transportation Research Board
ISBN: 0309223660
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 257

Book Description
"TRB's National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Synthesis 433: Significant Findings from Full-Scale Accelerated Pavement Testing documents and summarizes significant findings from the various experimental activities associated with full-scale accelerated pavement testing (f-sAPT) programs that have taken place between 2000 and 2011. The report also identifies gaps in knowledge related to f-sAPT and where future research may be needed. NCHRP Synthesis 433 is designed to expand the f-sAPT base of knowledge documented in NCHRP Syntheses 325 and 235, both with the same title of Significant Findings from Full-Scale Accelerated Pavement Testing. f-sAPT is the controlled application of a wheel loading, at or above the appropriate legal load limit, to a pavement system to determine pavement response in a compressed time period. The acceleration of damage is achieved by one or more of the following factors: increased repetitions, modified loading conditions, imposed climatic conditions, and thinner pavements with a decreased structural capacity which have shorter design lives"--

Comprehensive Evaluation and Data Analysis of Field Pavement Distress for Epoxy Asphalt Pavement on Steel Bridge Deck

Comprehensive Evaluation and Data Analysis of Field Pavement Distress for Epoxy Asphalt Pavement on Steel Bridge Deck PDF Author: Zhu Zhang
Publisher:
ISBN:

Pages : 0

Book Description
Epoxy asphalt mixtures are widely used as the paving layer of long-span steel bridges due to their excellent properties, such as high strength, and resistance to fatigue. However, like any material exposed to environmental factors and traffic loads, epoxy asphalt mixtures may undergo certain changes over time, leading to performance deterioration. At present, the statistical analysis on the in-situ pavement condition of steel bridge paving is insufficient. Therefore, a total of over 12,000 distress data from various in-service steel bridge deck pavements were collected and analyzed, and the main distress distribution characteristics were also summarized. Using random forest and long short-term memory (LSTM) regression models, the evolution of decay pavement distress was evaluated, and the importance of different variables in distress development was quantified. The key findings include that linear crack, map crack, and patching are the dominant pavement distress, accounting for over 90% of the pavement layer. The observation of an evident increase in pavement distress development after 9-11 years of service suggests that the epoxy asphalt mixture may be more prone to degradation or issues after this period. The cumulative number of equivalent axial loads (CEASLs) and service year exhibits the strongest correlation with distress intensity, while T≤15°C (days) has a negligible correlation. The importance calculation results show that service year and CESALs are identified as the most influential factors in distress development on steel bridge decks.
