With the enormous expansion in the amount of technical information that has become available during the past few decades, the challenge of retrieving required data has assumed gigantic proportions. In today's society there is a rapid growth of technology. A quantitative survey was conducted to identify the teachers' perception of online education. Two community colleges and two universities were selected to participate in this study. These institutions are geographically located in a widespread chain. The questionnaire consisted of 36 items that addressed the demographics and the instructors' perception of the quality of online education. Specifically, data was collected to assess the adequacy of the instructional, technical, and administrative support for teaching online courses, the problems encountered, and whether WebCT and Blackboard adequately serve the instructional needs of students and instructors.

The purpose of this study was to determine if there is a difference in the perception of online education effectiveness between community college academic administrators and faculty members. The perceptions of academic administrators, full-time faculty, and part-time faculty were examined to have a better understanding of how online education in community colleges in Arkansas might affect higher education in the future. The study included academic administrators and faculty members in community colleges in Arkansas. Prior research indicated that there would be differences in the perceptions of academic administrators and both full-and part-time faculty regarding online education in community colleges. However, the results of this study indicated that there was only one significant difference in perceptions among the academic administrators, full-and part-time faculty for four out of the five research questions. The only significant difference was the perception of academic administrators and full-time faculty regarding learning outcomes for online courses and face-to-face courses. The results of this study are important to continue the support and growth of online education in community colleges to meet the growing demand of higher education. It will provide suggestions to help create high quality, effective online courses and programs and to improve faculty experiences teaching online courses that will benefit community colleges in Arkansas.

The study investigated the faculty perception of quality in online courses. The areas considered were media richness, interaction, synchronism, self-efficacy, online teaching experience, and education level. Participants included members of three online Yahoo groups that were designed for online faculty members. There were 510 total members surveyed with 203 respondents for a response rate of 39.8%. The study was conducted during the spring semester of 2009. Of the six research questions four were supported. Media richness, interaction, and self-efficacy were related to perceived quality. Media richness explained a total of 7.9% of the variability in faculty ratings of perceived online course quality. The results for interaction indicate that a relationship was not found between interactions with students in general and perceived quality of the online course by faculty, however, a significant relationship was found between several of the individual interaction items and the quality items. The self-efficacy variable explained 30.6% of the variability in faculty ratings of perceived quality. Online teaching experience was related to perceived quality when controlling for course variables. Synchronism and faculty education level were not related to perceived quality. Conclusions based on the findings indicated that to increase faculty perception, course developers should focus on building classes with rich learning environments, creating feelings of perceived quality, and fostering commitment to the classroom. Courses that have media rich content convey the message to the student better than courses without the inclusion of such content. Interaction is the cornerstone of online learning so multiple modes of interaction are necessary in online courses. Having self-efficacy allow the faculty to accomplish their goal, handle unexpected events, find solutions to problems, and handle whatever might occur in the respective courses. Allowing faculty members to upload media rich information for future courses could add value to the course. Selecting a Learning Management System that allows for a highly interactive classroom is important to faculty members. Future research studies should evaluate the capabilities of additional constructs as determinants of perceived quality from the faculty perspective.

While there may be high demand for and an increased interest in pursuing distance education, the education obtained may not translate into jobs or careers, and the inability to secure a position is related to the hiring practices within organizations. Potential employers may hold a bias towards graduates of online degree programs. The purpose of this mixed-method, instrumental case study was to understand the hiring process within higher education and to understand the impact distance education and online degree education has on the hiring process within community colleges in Louisiana. The participants included administrators who served on a hiring committee for a non-faculty position. The participants in the study were surveyed and interviewed. A one- way ANOVA and thematic analysis were methods used to analyze the survey and interview data. The study revealed that there is no statistical difference in candidate choice and education type. Finding also revealed eight themes emerged through thematic analysis. Experience is the most important factor in the hiring process; Education is the foundation for obtaining employment; the applicant fits in with the college culture, possesses a specific skills set and is a good match for the position; personal experience impacts perception; online education is gaining positive traction; accreditation and reputation create a viable online degree programs; stigma still exists but is waning; and online education has minimal impact the hiring process. The study showed online degree programs have minimal impact on the hiring process in higher education..

Institutions of higher education are using distance education to meet the high demand of those seeking a college education. This is especially true for state/community colleges. There are many factors which influence the quality of distance courses, including, but not limited to, technology, pedagogy, and course structure. One of the main assumed factors is the level of training faculty receive prior to teaching online. This research describes a case study of a Florida state college and seeks to explore the faculty perceptions of the training they received in order to prepare for teaching online. This particular training program focuses on the learning platform. An in depth literature review is provided in order to examine the history of online education, the importance of student engagement, as well as a description of best practices for online course development. Results are organized around Moore's Theory of Transactional Distance and show the importance of faculty motivation to teach at a distance. A few emerging themes of online teaching influences appeared, including the importance of collaboration, comfort with technology, prior experience with distance education, enjoyment of teaching online, and fear of cheating.

The purpose of this study was to analyze the general education faculty members' perspectives on the internationalization of the general education curriculum in Mississippi community colleges. The participants in this study included all full-time instructors of general education courses at 2 of the 15 public community colleges in the state of Mississippi. The study used a survey Analysis of Faculty Perception: Factors Affecting the Internationalization of General Education Curriculum in Mississippi Community Colleges to examine factors that included a) importance of internationalization, b) institutional success with internationalization efforts and c) importance and existence of administrative support for internationalization. No studies were found that analyze nor investigate the importance of internationalizing the general education curriculum in Mississippi community colleges. Quantitative data were collected using Survey Monkey online instrument that was sent to full-time general education faculty members teaching at the 2 community colleges in the State of Mississippi. The data were analyzed using Kruskal-Wallis Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Mann-Whitney U Test tables and descriptive statistics were reported. Results showed that a large number of the educators recognized the need for a partner institution in another country. Many of them also recommended that there should be a designated administrative office to coordinate and support international education initiatives, and they also saw the need for their college to have a plan designed to increase international/global understanding among students and to have general education courses with an international/global focus available to all students. Some differences in perceptions were observed in the teachers' perceptions of internationalization based on years worked in higher education, country of birth, gender, international experience, and level of education. The educators believed that internationalization activities on their campus was a positive movement towards expanding their offerings to students by helping to develop an educational environment where they can become more globally competitive and more professionally effective. Many of the educators in this study support the expansion of programs that support study abroad or student exchange programs.
