A Longitudinal Study of Dyslexia
Author: Hans-Jörgen Gjessing
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1441987045
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 349
Book Description
Psychological and educational researchers in the Scandinavian countries have cooperated in a research effort relating to children's learning disabilities for more than a decade. Support has come from the federal governments and other funding agencies in Norway, Sweden, and Denmark through the Secretariat for Scan dinavian Cultural Cooperation. A number of independent studies have already been published, dealing with various aspects oflearning disabilities in the literacy skills of reading and writing. The largest and most comprehensive study was the Bergen Project, a longitudi nal study of an entire cohort of children, with special emphasis on those who developed specific learning disabilities in reading and writing (dyslexia). These dyslexic children were studied, diagnosed, and treated over a period of nine years, along with various control and comparison groups, which included a large subgroup with general learning disabilities (retarded). The Bergen Project involved the collection of voluminous data. The children were identified by means of special diagnostic tests and treated using remedial materials and techniques that had been developed to deal with various types of dyslexia. The ophthalmology team not only tested the children, but they also prescribed and provided glasses, and even performed surgery when necessary. The pediatric neurologists did general pediatric and neurological examinations, following up many of the cases with EEGs and CT (computerized tomography, brain x-rays).

Vision/visual Perception
Author: Samuel Weintraub
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 104
Book Description
An update and modification of "Vision-Visual Discrimination" published in 1973, this annotated bibliography contains entries from the annual summaries of research in reading published by the International Reading Association (IRA) since then. The first large section, "Vision," is divided into two subgroups: (1) "Visually Handicapped" and (2) "Visual Acuity and Efficiency." This section might be of use to individuals in the field of optometry and ophthalmology, school personnel interested in the relationship of visual acuity and efficiency to learning to read or to reading problems, and persons who work with the blind or visually impaired. The booklet's second major section, "Visual Perception," contains a wide assortment of diversified research on different topics loosely related to visual perception, including articles dealing with visual training programs, visual memory, visual discrimination, and visual perceptual testing. This section would probably be of value to individuals making curricular decisions, particularly those related to kindergarten readiness, beginning reading programs, and remedial reading instruction. A Handbook on Stuttering, Seventh Edition
Author: Oliver Bloodstein
Publisher: Plural Publishing
ISBN: 1635503183
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 600
Book Description
The revised edition of A Handbook on Stuttering continues its remarkable role as the authoritative, first-line resource for researchers and clinicians who work in the field of fluency and stuttering. Now in its seventh edition, this unique book goes beyond merely updating the text to include coverage of roughly 1,000 articles related to stuttering research and practice that have been published since 2008. This extended coverage integrates the more traditional body of research with evolving views of stuttering as a multi-factorial, dynamic disorder. Comprehensive, clear, and accurate, this text provides evidence-based, practical information critical to understanding stuttering. By thoroughly examining the intricacies of the disorder, A Handbook on Stuttering, Seventh Edition lays the foundation needed before considering assessment and treatment. New to the Seventh Edition: * A completely reorganized table of contents, including two new chapters. * The deletion of approximately 1,000 non-peer-reviewed references from the previous edition to assure discussion of the highest quality evidence on stuttering. * New content on the development of stuttering across the lifespan and assessment. * Given the Handbook’s historic role as a primary reference for allied professionals, a new chapter that addresses myths and misconceptions about stuttering * Expanded coverage on the role of temperament in childhood stuttering * Expanded coverage of brain-based research, genetics, and treatment findings. * A thoroughly updated chapter on conditions under which stuttering fluctuates * Brief tutorial overviews of critical concepts in genetics, neuroimaging, language analysis and other relevant constructs, to better enable reader appreciation of research findings. * A greater selection of conceptual illustrations of basic concepts and findings than in prior editions * Integrated cross-referencing to content across chapters
