Examining the Role of Trust in the Principal-teacher Relationship
Author: Kathleen Gallagher Kotch

Pages : 95
Book Description
The purpose of this study was to examine the role of trust in the principal-teacher relationship. This qualitative research study investigated the perceptions of 59 building level administrators from eastern Pennsylvania, regarding the qualities and leadership styles utilized by principals, as well as the relevance of their respective principal certification programs. Through the use of an online survey consisting of multiple-choice, Likert-scale, and open-ended questions, the study identified building level administrators' perceptions regarding the qualities needed to establish trusting relationships between teachers and principals. Leadership styles and how they impact trust relationships, and preparation during administrative certification programs for building trusting relationships with teachers were also indicated in the research. Individual interviews with six participants provided additional insight into their perceptions. The findings from this research revealed that building level administrators, based upon their experience and prior knowledge, affirmed that principals must first extend trust to their staff. All participants indicated that effective communication and visibility throughout the school are essential components to building trust. Findings also identified that modeling trusting behaviors exemplifies the leadership style for promoting principal-teacher relationships. Building level administrators also noted that shared decision making and support in the form of resources impact the trust relationship. Response data supported that principal certification programs should be redesigned to focus more on developing leaders who establish trusting relationships with teachers as the foundation for student success. Recommendations include suggestions for further research in the area of trust and its impact on school leadership.
