Book Description
Most couples enter marriage hoping to experience happiness and satisfaction. This study acknowledges that spouses bring their worldviews, personalities, behaviors, and emotions to the marriage relationship, and for this reason, this study investigates the connection between marital satisfaction and attachment style as mediated by emotional intelligence and religious commitment in a sample of heterosexual married Christian individuals living in the United States. This quantitative, non-experimental, survey-based research analyzes data collected through Amazon Mechanical Turk from 530 married individuals to understand the relationship between variables affecting marital satisfaction. Results from Pearson’s correlation analyses show a significant relationship between attachment style subscales (avoidance and anxiety) and marital satisfaction (p

The Relationship Between Rightness, Religiosity, and Marital Satisfaction Among Christian Spouses in the United States

The Relationship Between Rightness, Religiosity, and Marital Satisfaction Among Christian Spouses in the United States PDF Author: Juan Arturo Paulino

Book Description
Marital satisfaction is paramount to a loving and long-lasting married life. The absence of marital satisfaction can lead to poor health, relational stress, and, eventually, divorce. This predictive, correlational study sought to research the relationship between the adoption of a position of rightness, the practice of extrinsic religiosity, and how these factors influence the levels of marital satisfaction among Christian spouses in the United States of America. The researcher used the Brief Version of the Religious Orientation Scale- Revised (ROS-R) to assess the level of intrinsic and extrinsic religious activity of the sample population. To measure the independent variable of their adherence to relational rightness, the researcher used the Revised Sense of Relational Entitlement the community (SRE-R). For the dependent variable of marital satisfaction, the researcher used the Locke-Wallace Marital Assessment Test (LWMAT). Three findings emerged from the study with practical implications for clergy, counselors, and couples: the theme of “false friends”, “religious amplification”, and “one size fits half”. The study concludes that an inflated sense of relational entitlement and extrinsic religiosity negatively impact the marital satisfaction of married Christian couples in the United States.

Spouses' Scriptural Beliefs, the Faithfulness of Relationship with God, and Marital Satisfaction

Spouses' Scriptural Beliefs, the Faithfulness of Relationship with God, and Marital Satisfaction PDF Author: Cristina Sanda Emrich

Book Description
A substantial body of research attests to religion's prominent influence on marital relationship quality. Aspects of religiosity that appear to enhance the quality of marital relationships include couples’ religious homogamy, prayer, religious involvement, spouses’ virtues, and sanctification of marriage. The couples reported studying the Scriptures to be beneficial in coping with life challenges and playing an important role in spouses’ conflict resolution. This study examines the association between marital satisfaction and biblical principles related to constructs such as forgiveness and commitment. It is assumed that relational virtues become relevant for marital quality as scriptural beliefs required by God. Spouses forgive and commit to their partner as a submission to God that works sanctification in their lives, impacting marital satisfaction. The quantitative survey method is used to assess the relationship between spouses’ scriptural beliefs, the faithfulness of their relationship with God, and marital satisfaction. The convenience sample is used to select 200 married Protestant Christians from the church members list to complete a Qualtrics survey. Multiple regressions analysis helps to illustrate how biblical beliefs relate to marital satisfaction. The study identifies scriptural beliefs that practitioners can utilize to help couples form and maintain well-functioning unions. Future research needs to search for more specific biblical beliefs that contribute to couples’ well-being and develop counseling programs for couples that nurture the manifestation of marital virtues through God’s sanctification process.

Measuring the Effect of Personal Religious Experience, Religious Homogamy, and Joint Religious Activity on Marital Satisfaction

Measuring the Effect of Personal Religious Experience, Religious Homogamy, and Joint Religious Activity on Marital Satisfaction PDF Author: Jamie Lynn Oslawski

Book Description
Abstract: Previous research has consistently documented a positive relationship between religion and marital satisfaction. However, these studies often relied upon one construct of religion. Using data from the Marriage and Relationship Study (MARS), a nationally representative dataset of middle to low income couples, this study performs OLS regression analysis to investigate the effects of three constructs of religiosity--personal religious experience, religious homogamy, and joint religious activity--on marital satisfaction to determine which of these measures best accounts for marital satisfaction. The results reveal that joint religious activity is the only significant indicator of marital satisfaction, suggesting that the integrative properties of religion matter most for marital satisfaction. In other words, religion has the greatest positive impact on marriage when a couple practices their faith together. Future research should continue using measures of religion that tap into the integration of religion into marriage when studying the relationship between religion and marital quality.

The Influence of Religiosity and Adult Attachment Style on Marital Satisfaction Among Korean Christian Couples Living in South Korea

The Influence of Religiosity and Adult Attachment Style on Marital Satisfaction Among Korean Christian Couples Living in South Korea PDF Author: Dae Woon Cho

Pages : 130

Book Description
The primary purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of religious commitment, spirituality and adult attachment style on marital satisfaction among South Korean Christian couples living in South Korea. Three hundred sixty nine South Korean Christian couples from nine Presbyterian churches in Seoul, Dejeon, Daegu, Gumi, and Busan participated in this research. The current study evaluated the psychometric utility of the Spiritual Assessment Scale (SAS) and investigated the relationships among religiosity (religious commitment and spirituality), attachment style (anxious and avoidant attachment) and marital satisfaction. For the psychometric evaluation of the SAS, Confirmatory Factor Analysis was conducted for the population and led to poor findings. Simple regression analysis and multiple regression analysis were then conducted to investigate the relationships between the remaining predictor variables (religious commitment and attachment style) and criterion variable (marital satisfaction). According to the analyses, religious commitment and attachment style are predictive of marital satisfaction.

Enriching Pastoral Couples' Marriages in the Seventh-Day Adventist Church in Australia

Enriching Pastoral Couples' Marriages in the Seventh-Day Adventist Church in Australia PDF Author: Trafford Arthur Fischer

Book Description
The goal of this study was to outline how pastoral couples in the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Australia might strengthen their marriages. This is deemed to be an imperative considering the pain and loss of a broken marriage, and in particular a pastor's marriage. It is argued that this endeavour will find a greater chance of success when the pastoral couple's commitment to marital enrichment is supported by the Seventh-day Adventist Church administration and the church members. Through an examination of the Scriptures, this study identifies intimacy in a marital union to be God-designed and blessed by Jesus Christ. Married couples who identify as Christian will recognize that their marriages are to be a statement about the love of God for his Church. This love is to be a self-sacrificing love just as Jesus gave himself in love to his Church. Pastoral couples who set out to enrich and empower their marriages and commit to bringing them towards the love of Jesus will find greater empowerment to minister their churches. Research in the social science reveals that genuine marital love will find its richest meaning through emotional intimacy. The study outlines how pastoral couples might find opportunities within the church setting to experience emotional intimacy, and how these opportunities can be made richer through supportive ministry from their administrators and members. The study also provides strategies for initiating this three-part ministry into the Seventh-day Adventist churches in Australia. The study concludes that while not all churches might choose to take up this initiative, nor might all pastoral couples choose to make a commitment to strengthen their marriages, or all church administrators commit to supporting their pastoral staff in their marital journey, the project is worthy of investigation and inclusion in the SDA Church ministry program.
