Book Description
Excerpt from Detailed Study of Specifications for Steel Bridges: Thesis The science of bridge design has not yet reached that ideal stage where a purely theoretical treatment of all divisions of the subject can be made. Huch must still be left to the individual iudgement of engineers, and just so long as assumptions nust be made will there be diferences in opinion. The writer has taken as an example of recent specifications those published by the American Railway Engineering and haintenance of Way Association for 1006, and, selecting certain of the clauses upon which there is some diversltg of opinion, has endeavored to deduce from dis eussions published in the proceedings of engineering societies and in the engineering press for the last twenty years or more and from the theories given in textbooks the laws that obtain, in so far as they have been established. The conclusions are stated at the close of each discussion in the form of a ne. Clause em bodysng any changes that seem to be juftifiable. Book Description
Excerpt from A Detailed Study of Bridge Specifications The writer, wishing to present a subject dealing with structural engineering as his thesis, and since nearly every other field in that line had already been thoroughly covered decided to investigate specifications for steel railroad bridges. Therefore, cooper's 1906 Specifications for Steel Railroad Bridges and Via ducts were chosen as a nucleus about which to base the discussion first, because they were very recent; second, because they were considered as standard; and third, because of the writer's famil iarity with them. Book Description
Excerpt from Iron and Steel Bridges and Viaducts: A Practical Treatise Upon Their Construction for the Use of Engineers, Draughtsmen, and Students Although a history of bridge-building, interesting and instructive as it is, would be out of place in these pages, it is desirable to glance lightly at the evolution of modern typical bridges from the cruder structures of earlier times.
