A Prospective Examination of Freshman Weight Change During the First Semester of College

A Prospective Examination of Freshman Weight Change During the First Semester of College PDF Author: Christina RaeAnne Nice (Graduate student)
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Body weight
Languages : en
Pages : 80

Book Description
Abstract: Entry into college is a time of environmental, behavioral, and self-identity change. There is a gap in the literature of in-depth, prospective studies that examine weight change and health behaviors changes among ethnically diverse college freshmen in the United States. The purpose of this study was to evaluate weight and body composition change among California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) freshman students during their first semester of college. As a secondary objective, health behaviors linked to weight change among this population were assessed. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, weight and body composition measurements were not able to be taken in-person. Recruitment was done by email and flyers placed in the residence halls. Three female participants completed a baseline (August 2020) and follow-up (December 2020) survey self-reporting height and weight, health behaviors, fruit and vegetable intake, physical activity, sleep habits, and perceived stress. There was no difference in the average weight of the sample between the baseline (M = 184.06, SD = 30.40) and follow-up (M = 184.14, SD = 28.75). Similarly, there was no difference in average BMI between the baseline (M = 30.95, SD = 7.41) and follow-up (M = 30.67, SD = 6.78). Descriptive statistics were presented for health behaviors, barriers to health behaviors and participants’ ranking of health behaviors. While no inferential analyses were run, descriptive analyses showed that, on average, data were similar at both time points. Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic impacted the original design of the study and sample size. Future research should aim to identify the influential factors on health and weight status of college students, specifically freshmen.

Investigating Changes in Weight of College Freshmen in the Pacific Northwest

Investigating Changes in Weight of College Freshmen in the Pacific Northwest PDF Author: Megan Phillips
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 68

Book Description
This study investigated changes in weight in college freshmen at a small university in the Pacific Northwest. A growing body of literature has investigated the recent phenomenon that college students may be vulnerable to a rapid weight gain that could predispose them to a number of unhealthy consequences. The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of any weight gain in college freshman and any factors that might be associated with this finding such as physical activity levels, caloric intake, and the use of healthy campus options available to students. The results indicated that a substantial weight gain was not found, but students tended to, on average, gain more than what was expected for a typical adult given the time frame. Other contributing factors could not be determined from this study. Possible intervention strategies are cited in an effort to improve upon future research in this area.

Pages : 159

Book Description
The beloved bestselling author of The Road from Coorain and True North continues her remarkable autobiography with an account of her decade as the first woman president of Smith College–a time when she was faced with the challenge of reinventing women’s education and with the demands of her own life. Conway took on the helm at Smith at the height of exploding culture wars and the rising popularity of coeducation. With the college’s future at stake, she battled conservative faculty, ossified traditions, and doubtful funders to turn Smith into a place committed to preparing young women for the new realities of the future. Through it all, Conway served as an inspiration to thousands of students, while balancing the demands of her public role against the private pressures of coping with her husband’s bipolar disorder. A moving tribute to the value of single-sex education and to one woman’s achievements, A Woman’s Education is sure to become a classic.
