The design requirements for future airborne weapon systems show an increasing drive towards improving their overall performance and flexibility whilst at the same time reducing the total weight and the resulting cost. These requirements generate the need for much closer integration of the subsystems which make up the total weapon system. This approach to total systems integration, forces the weapon system designer to look for improved design techniques which are capable of coping with the complexity and high interdependence of the various functions involved. This paper describes a structured approach to the design of highly integrated weapon systems of the future. The approach was used in the successful design and development of the avionics system for the UK Experimental Aircraft Programme (EAP) demonstrator aircraft. Brief descriptions are given of the EAP systems, the main system design tools used, the activities carried out during the systems design process and the management and control procedures adopted. According to the Government Accountability Office, sustainment of weapon systems accounts for approximately 70 percent of the total life-cycle costs. When sustainment is not considered early in the development process or as an integral part of the systems engineering design, it can negatively affect the ability of the Air Force to maintain and improve the weapon system once it enters service. This volume describes the supporting programs used in conjunction with a cost estimating program to provide a trade study cost estimating technique for aerodynamic surfaces. The supporting programs for the purpose of this discussion are defined as a structural synthesis program and a secondary structure synthesis program. The structural synthesis program is used for the analysis of primary structure and is called APAS (Automated Program for Aerospace-Vehicle Synthesis). The secondary structure synthesis program estimates geometry and weights, and performs parts definition for the aerodynamic surface leading edge, trailing edge, and tip components. The cost estimating adaptation is derived from programs originally developed under Independent research and development.
