The main objective of this study was to understand the sociolinguistic situation of Pashtu community in present day Kashmir. Other objective was to understand the impact of Urdu and Kashmiri on Pashtu. The study was aimed at a comprehensive sociolinguistic account of Pashtu speakers in Kashmir valley. The study examined various features associated with the Pashtuns of Kashmir. As a minority community Pashtuns have been living in Kashmir from past 150 years and have been successful somehow in settling as groups in various districts of Kashmir valley. Inspite of being a minority community, Pashtuns have maintained their language and culture and have kept themselves distinct from the mainstream society. In this sociolinguistic study, it was interesting to note that Pashtuns in Kashmir although very conscious about Pashtu language and identity have somehow been influenced by their contact with Kashmiri majority in particular and the global society in general. This study has shown that education among youth is fostering positive attitudes towards the use of Kashmiri and Urdu.

Argument structure of Kashmiri is a study of the grammatical patterns one finds in the Indo-Aryan language Kashmiri. Kashmiri shows several unique linguistic features which sets it aside from more well-known Indo-Aryan languages. Drawing primarily on oral sources from the author’s own research carried out between 1993 and 1997, this book outlines the settlement history of Pashto speakers in Pakistan’s Northern Areas over the last 150 years, concentrating on the decades following the opening of the Karakoram Highway in 1978. Besides this, it looks at how the migrants’ language situation had developed by the mid 1990s. The increasing globalization and centralization in the world is threatening the existence of a large number of smaller languages. In South Asia some locally dominant languages (e.g., Hindi, Urdu, Nepali) are gaining ground beside English at the expense of the lesser-known languages. Despite a long history of stable multilingualism, language death is not uncommon in the South Asian context. We do not know how the language situation in South Asia will be affected by modern information and communication technologies: Will cultural and linguistic diversity be strengthened or weakened as they become increasingly prevalent in all walks of life? This volume brings together areas of research that so far do not interact to any significant extent: traditional South Asian descriptive linguistics and sociolinguistics, documentary linguistics, issues of intellectual and cultural property and fieldwork ethics, and language technology. Researchers working in the areas of documentary linguistics and language technology have become aware of each other in the last few years, and of how work in the other area could be potentially useful in furthering their own aims. Similarly, the insights of documentary linguistics are making their way into descriptive linguistics and sociolinguistics. However, the potential for synergy among these areas of research is almost limitless.
