Languages : en
Pages : 638

Book Description
This is the 2nd edition of volume 1 of the ten volumes of The Meaning And Explanation Of The Glorious Qur'an. The first edition of this book contained many formatting and typing errors. In this new edition, we have corrected all the errors found in the first edition. We have also re-arranged the structure of the book and added the full Arabic Text of the thirty Parts of the Qur'an. The reader is now able to read not only the meaning, the transliteration and the tafsir (explanation) of the Glorious Qur'an but also the full Arabic text as well. Our mission is to gather in one place, for the English-speaking public, all relevant information needed to make the Qur'an more understandable and easier to study. This book tries to do this by providing the following: 1. The Arabic Text for those who are able to read Arabic 2. Transliteration of the Arabic text for those who are unable to read the Arabic script. This will give them a sample of the sound of the Qur'an, which they could not otherwise comprehend from reading the English meaning. 3. The meaning of the qur'an (translated by Dr. Muhammad Taqi-ud-Din Al-Hilali, Ph.D. and Dr. Muhammad Muhsin Khan) 4. Background introductions by two famous Islamic scholars, Maududi and Ibn Kathir 5. Explanation (abridged Tafsir) by Ibn Kathir (translated by Safi-ur-Rahman al-Mubarakpuri) We hope that by doing this an ordinary English-speaker will be able to pick up a copy of this book and study and comprehend The Glorious Qur'an in a way that is acceptable to the understanding of the Rightly-guided Muslim Ummah (Community).

The New Testament Devotional Commentary, Volume 1

The New Testament Devotional Commentary, Volume 1 PDF Author: Bo Giertz
Publisher: New Reformation Publications
ISBN: 1945978805
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 546

Book Description
Bo Giertz was a serious biblical scholar who avoided the ivory tower. He studied classics in undergrad before taking up theology in preparation for the ministry. In 1930 he spent time on an archeological dig in Palestine and travelled the country with his exegetical professor Anton Fridrichsen who insisted on "Biblical Realism," which avoided fundamentalism and yet refused to succumb to higher criticism. In these commentaries, Bo Giertz takes what he learned from a lifetime of such study and application in in sermons and visits with people to open Scripture to anyone who wants to grow in their faith. He never avoids the hard questions concerning the texts, and yet tackles them in such a way as to restore confidence in God's word. Here, he is concerned with what the text meant to those who first wrote it and heard it so he can deliver the same goods to us today.

The Expositions On The Psalms Volume 1

The Expositions On The Psalms Volume 1 PDF Author: St. Augustine of Hippo
Publisher: Jazzybee Verlag
ISBN: 3849675963
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 382

Book Description
In any commentary on a portion of the Old Testament by a writer unacquainted with Hebrew, exact criticism, and freedom from mistake, must not be expected. But the Psalms have been so in the mouth and in the heart of God's people in all languages, that it has been necessary often to find an explanation suitable to imperfect translations. And no doubt it is intended that we should use such explanations for the purpose of edification, when we are unable to be more accurate, though in proving doctrine it is necessary always to remember and allow for any want of acquaintance with the original, or uncertainty with respect to its actual meaning. However, the main scope and bearing of the text is rarely affected by such points as vary in different translations, and the analogy of the faith is sufficient to prevent a Catholic mind from adopting any error in consequence of a text seeming to bear a heterodox meaning. Perhaps the errors of translation in the existing versions may have led the Fathers to adopt rules of interpretation ranging too far from the simple and literal; but having such translations, they could hardly use them otherwise. Meanwhile St. Augustin will be found to excel in the intense apprehension of those great truths which pervade the whole of Sacred Writ, and in the vivid and powerful exposition of what bears upon them. It is hardly possible to read his practical and forcible applications of Holy Scripture, without feeling those truths by the faith of which we ought to live brought home to the heart in a wonderful manner. His was a mind that strove earnestly to solve the great problems of human life, and after exhausting the resources, and discovering the emptiness, of erroneous systems, found truth and rest at last in Catholic Christianity, in the religion of the Bible as expounded by St. Ambrose. This is volume one out of two, covering the Psalms I through LXXIII.

Giotto the Painter. Volume 1-3

Giotto the Painter. Volume 1-3 PDF Author: Michael Viktor Schwarz
Publisher: Böhlau Wien
ISBN: 3205217357
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 1454

Book Description
Vol. 1: Life Giotto (1334) is the first European artist about whom it is possible to write following the schema of "life and work". The situation of the sources, however, is complicated: On Giotto's life, there are – on the one hand – biographical accounts from the mid-fourteenth century onwards that responded to various ideological requirements (patriotism, humanism, Renaissance ideology, cult of the artist); on the other, there is extensive documentary material from Giotto's lifetime, which seems to reflect less the biography of an artist than that of a bourgeois businessman resolutely climbing the social ladder. The present volume focuses on this second aspect of the Giotto figure's double life relating it to the form of existence of the pre-modern artist. Vol. 2: Works The paintings examined and contextualised in this volume are those secured for Giotto through early written sources. These sources also help to reconstruct the sequence of his works and artistic inventions as is plausible in the context of media culture in the decades around and after 1300: while Giotto was spiritually and intellectually formed in the sphere of the Florentine Dominicans, his artistic path began in Rome in the shadow of the Curia. The breakthrough to his own artistic concept came immediately before and during his work in Padua. In addition to prominent churchmen, ecclesiastical institutions, and the King of Naples, his clients were predominantly members of Italy's urban and financial elites. The adoption and further development of his inventions by other - especially Sienese - painters pressured him in his later years to try new approaches again. Vol. 3: Survival Giotto is considered by many to be the founder of modern painting. This thesis is discussed and modified in the present volume on an empirical basis. What emerges is that Giotto's impact cannot be reduced simply to the introduction of the study of nature. Rather, his art was involved in the development of pictorial idioms that were attuned to the skills and interests of their audiences. The new approaches in his painting contributed in particular to the possibility of examining and communicating psychological, narrative and allegorical content of great complexity outside the media of language and text, which not only changed the face of European art but certainly contributed to the intellectual opening of Western societies.

Brenton's Septuagint, Restored Names Version, Volume 1

Brenton's Septuagint, Restored Names Version, Volume 1 PDF Author: Clinton R Smith
Publisher: Lulu.com
ISBN: 1312091479
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 622

Book Description
The Septuagint is the only extant Greek translation from a Hebrew MSS that is currently lost to us. The Greek Septuagint and its Autograph, were extensively used before the Christian era as has been testified to by historians and many similarities manifest in the Dead Sea Scrolls. During the age of the Messiah and the Apostles it appears they exclusively used either the Greek Septuagint or its Autograph as is demonstrated by the parallels found in their quotes from the Hebrew Scriptures [O.T]. The Septuagint persevered into the age of the early Church Fathers where after it inexplicably fell into disuse. This is a fresh approach to Sir Brenton's translation, in that this it restores the original Hebrew Names as found in the Masoretic Text. While this approach may seem like a glaring paradox it may however be reasoned that a more satisfying though not perfect English translation has subsequently evolved.
