Book Description
Excerpt from A Short and Plain Way to the Faith and Church The power of darkness prevailed, and began to overspread three kingdoms, Almighty God, by the means of this book, made light to shine out of darkness, and began thus early to recompense his temporal obscurity in his retirement at Moseley, in Staffordshire, by sowing in his heart the seeds of an indeficient light, which, through all the Opposition of the three enemies of mankind, by the unwearied hand of Providence, wrought themselves at last into a perfect day and as that Providence made me an unworthy instrument in preserving the person of my Sovereign (which I mention, not to arrogate any thing to myself, for I did no more than the principles of my religion and allegiance obliged me to), so it appointed me the keeper of this excellent treatise, to which God gave such an admirable increase: and the same reasons which made me keep it ever since, as a great treasure, have at length prevailed with me to make it public, that others may enrich themselves by it. After which resolution taken, I did not long deliberate to whom I should make the first tender of it, it being your Majesty's in right of the King; and as such, I lay it, with myself, at your sacred feet, being. Excerpt from The Faith of a Quaker There arise also the insistent questions which beset all mystics, and which in Quakerism demanded a corporate, instead of an individual, answer. Plain Theology for Plain People

Plain Theology for Plain People PDF Author: Charles Octavius Boothe
Publisher: Lexham Press
ISBN: 168359066X
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 178

Book Description
Everyday Christians need practical and accessible theology. In this handbook first published in 1890, Charles Octavius Boothe simply and beautifully lays out the basics of theology for common people. "Before the charge 'know thyself,'" Boothe wrote, "ought to come the far greater charge, 'know thy God.'" He brought the heights of academic theology down to everyday language, and he helps us do the same today. Plain Theology for Plain People shows that evangelicalism needs the wisdom and experience of African American Christians. Walter R. Strickland II reintroduces this forgotten masterpiece for today. Lexham Classics are beautifully typeset new editions of classic works. Each book has been carefully transcribed from the original texts, ensuring an accurate representation of the writing as the author intended it to be read.

A Reasonable Faith

A Reasonable Faith PDF Author: Arthur Crosby

ISBN: 9781330793428
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 208

Book Description
Excerpt from A Reasonable Faith: Plain Sermons on Familiar Christian Evidences In California, skepticism among respectable people is much more outspoken than in the Eastern States. Good men, whose families are in the church, excellent citizens and neighbors, do not hesitate to express with utmost candor their unbelief in revealed religion. There is very little conventional, or merely formal Christianity here, for there is almost no temptation for a man to conceal his real sentiments if he be an unbeliever. It is just about as respectable to play lawn tennis, or to go duck-shooting of a Sunday morning, as to go to church. This practical irreligion is generally either the efficient cause or the immediate result of the prevailing skepticism; so that, as a rule, the line is sharply drawn between believers and unbelievers. Plain Thoughts on Faith and Life (Classic Reprint)

Plain Thoughts on Faith and Life (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: Wellesley P. Coddington
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9780483838765
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 232

Book Description
Excerpt from Plain Thoughts on Faith and Life From that hour of revelation before the gates of Damascus to the hour of his martyrdom at Rome, Paul presents an example of mar velons courage, faith, and hope. At times, however, as he views the vastness of the work and the fewness of'the workers the profound sadness of his soul vents itself in such expres sions as our text: All men - all men are seek ing their own. His words suggest for our serious meditation the universal weakness of humanity, the sin of inordinate self-seeking. Taking life at its lowest valuation - that of the individual happiness - even then the self centere'd life is a failure. With vast erudition John Stuart Mill argued for happiness as the chief end of life. Yet he was forced to confess that if one should pursue his own happiness as his supreme object, he must fail to attain it.
