Book Description
Excerpt from Twenty-Second Report of the Department of Public Records and Archives of Ontario, 1933 It is a matter of regret that it is impossible to present a complete record of the Minutes from 1800 to 1819, but diligent searching has failed thus far to discover those for the years '1810 to December, 1813. The search will be continued and it is hoped that this publication will bring those for the missing years, which may be in private hands, to light. The Department is indebted to Prof. Fred Landon, librarian of the University of Western Ontario, for the loan of the first nine years Of the Minutes. The Minutes for the subsequent years are preserved in this Department. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Report of the Temporary Examiner of Public Records, 1906 In accordance with the requirements of the statute I have the 'honor to here present my second report as Temporary, Examiner of Public Records. The work of this office has been carried forward for the present term on the same lines as laid down in my first report. The action of the General Assembly in approving legislation asked for, which had a tendency to improve the conditions under which protection from fire was afforded, satisfied me that insistence on strict compliance with legal requirements would best carry out the ideas which led to the creation of this office. I have therefore unhesitatingly required that, so far as possible, all old and doubtful safes should be replaced by new and modern fireproof safes of a standard make. Many new safes have been purchased, but there are still in use in many towns safes used for the protection of valuable books and papers which are utterly useless for the purpose. Whet ever possible I have induced the authorities to discard safes and build fireproof vaults. In quite a number of small towns this has been done. Burlington has erected an Office building with a good brick vault. Washington has built a vault of modern concrete construction, which I consider a model for its size. Berlin, Westbrook, Redding, and other towns either have taken or are considering such a course. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. In the thirty-second report of the state librarian there is printed an Index to Maine Public Documents, 1834 - 1867, and an elaborate Index to Economic Material in the Documents of Maine has been pre pared by Adelaide R. Hasse and published (1907 the Carnegie Institution of Washington. These two indices are invaluable guides to the state publications. Book Description
Excerpt from Sixth Report on the Custody and Condition of the Public Records of Parishes, Towns and Counties, 1894 I have the honor to submit the second report of this com mission, being the sixth in the series of reports on public records. It is the duty of the commissioners to report to the Legis latare such recommendations and suggestions as may seem important for the safety and benefit of the records, and such have been presented in previous reports. As the report submitted in 1893 was, upon the recommendation of the Committee of the Judiciary, referred to this General Court, it will be unnecessary to repeat the recommendations made therein. The reports have in previous years been referred to the Committee on the Judiciary, always an overburdened committee, with the result that sufficient time could not be given to hear the persons most interested in them and best informed as to the legislation required, or for the considera tion of the general revision of the laws relating to the public records, which is imperatively necessary. It is, therefore, respectfully suggested that a joint special committee be ap pointed to consider the matter of the care and custody of the records and such kindred subjects as would properly be within its province. Book Description
Excerpt from Eleventh Report of the Custody and Condition of the Public Records The evil of these contests and changes is realized by members of the city governments and the people, and various remedies are suggested. One which is frequently made is that the two parties shall agree that the clerk shall be of one party and the treasurer of another, and that they shall then be undisturbed. This would perpetuate the par tisan idea. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Nineteenth Report of the Department of Public Records and Archives of Ontario, 1930 The contents Of this volume are a continuation of data on the Settlement of Upper Canada contained in several previous Reports. Of this invaluable original material, constituting official State documents, there is in the Ontario Archives a considerable quantity which is being gradually prepared for publication and, as conditions permit, will appear. The Department is under Obligation which falls here to be gratefully acknowledged. Early this year two valuable oils were received, each from the brush of Benjamin West, in his day an artist of note. One depicts the death of Wolfe, a scene familiar by copies and engravings of West's original. The other is a striking representation of the naval action Off La Hogue in 1692, a victory important to the British cause and an example of characteristic British seamanship. It may be incidentally mentioned that the canvas in each case is expansive, measuring eight feet in length and five feet four inches in height. Both pictures have attracted the attention of many visitors, who are always made welcome in the Department.
