Book Description
Excerpt from Elementary Algebra: Second Course Tms volume has been prepared as a companion to the first course in elementary algebra, written by the same authors. As its title suggests, the second course is designed for students who have had the equivalent of the work given in the first course. The first course gives one year's work, including the topics now generally taught in the first year of the average high school. The second course reviews the topics treated in the first course, amplifies the treatment in the latter by the addition of new matter where necessary, and extends the course to include all topics required for admission to college. First Course in Algebra (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: Herbert E. Hawkes

Book Description
Excerpt from First Course in Algebra The present revision of the Complete School Algebra bears substantially the same relation to the revised First Course and Second Course that the first edition bore to the original texts. In the revision of each of these texts material for which there is no strong demand from teachers has been omitted, and the entire work has been rewritten in the interest of greater simplicity and directness of appeal. The collections of exercises and problems are for the most part new and contain a larger proportion of easy exercises with simple results than the first edition. A striking feature of the revision is the inclusion of a large number of oral exercises in connection with the introduction of each new idea or Operation. It is the object of these exer cises to present the new concept in complete isolation from any complication of notation or technique so that the student becomes familiar with its content and bearing before he is asked to make use of it in written work. These oral exercises may well be taken up when the advance lesson is assigned, so that the pupil may be certain that he understands the idea involved in the new work before he leaves his instructor. Another feature scarcely less important is the character and position of the examples and hints. The aim has been to help the student at the exact point where he needs it and to avoid the insertion of lengthy and difficult solutions before they can be completely understood. The definitions and axioms have been expressed in the simplest language which is consistent with scientific accuracy. Many definitions which are usually found in elementary texts but which do not contribute to the clearness of the subject are omitted. Book Description
Excerpt from Practical Algebra Second Course The conception of functionality is developed as carefully and fully as it can be for pupils of the maturity of those who study algebra. The claims of this topic are now being strongly urged by the highest authorities. Many of the features of the author's First Year Course, such as simplicity of presentation, minimum number of cases in topics, treatment of factoring and of graphs, constant reference to the axioms in the solution of equations, systematic testing for accuracy, translating to and from algebraic language, conservatism in the order of topics, etc., will be found likewise in this book. The inductive treatment, so prominent a feature of the First Course, is partly replaced in this by the deductive, because pupils are now far better prepared to understand its meaning. A Brief

Book Description
Excerpt from A Brief: Course in College Algebra Mention may be made of the fact that certain sections of the book have been starred to indicate that they are of minor importance and may be omitted without destroying the continuity of the whole. Also, in view of the natural over lapping of certain parts of the college course with the more advanced parts of the usual second, or advanced course of the high school, the author has not hesitated in the treatment of some of the earlier topics, such as the progressions, variation, binomial theorem and logarithms, to follow closely the treat ment of these same topics to be found in the later pages of the Second Course in Algebra by Ford and Ammerman (mac millan), the exercises, however, being changed. The author would here express his thanks to Professor E. B. Lytle, of the University of Illinois, who read the manu script and offered valuable suggestions, and to Professor J. L. Markley and Mr. R. W. Barnard, of the University of Michigan, who assisted in reading the proofs. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from High School Algebra Complete The Second Course in Algebra, beginning page 241, is designed for use in the second or third year of the high school course. In common practice the mathematics courses in high schools require a year of geometry following the first year algebra, but this course does not assume a knowledge of geometry; it may follow in a continuous study of the sub jcet through a year and a half or two years, as required in some schools.
