Book Description
The status of the MEGA experiment is described. It is a search for the decay [mu] {r arrow} e[gamma] with a branching ratio sensitivity of approximately 10−13. The observation of this decay would indicate the existence of physics outside the standard model of electroweak interactions. The experiment employs highly modular, fast detectors, state-of-the-art electronics, and a staged trigger with on-line filters. The detectors are contained in a 1.5 T solenoidal field produced by a superconducting magnet. Positrons are confined to the central region and are measured by a set of thin MWPCs. Photons are measured by one of four layers of pair spectrometers in the outer region. Most aspects of the detector design have been validated in engineering runs; data taking will begin in 1990 with most of the electron arm and one pair spectrometer layer installed. 5 refs., 4 figs.

Book Description
This report describes the status of the MEGA experiment, which is a search for the decay [mu] → e[gamma] with a branching ratio sensitivity of approximately 10−13. The observation of this decay would contradict the empirically established rule of lepton family number conservation and would indicate the existence of physics outside the standard model of electroweak interactions. The experimental design employs highly modular, fast detectors, state-of-the-art electronics, and a staged trigger with online filters. The detectors are contained in a 15 kG solenoidal field produced by a superconducting magnet. Positrons are confined to the central region and are measured by a set of thin MWPCs. Photons are measured by one of four layers of pair spectrometers in the outer region. Most aspects of the detector design have been validated in engineering runs; data taking will begin in 1990 with the electron arm and one pair spectrometer layer installed. 9 refs., 1 fig.

Book Description
The connection of rare decays to supersymmetric grand unification is highlighted, and a brief review of the status of rare decay experiments is given. The status of the MEGA experiment, a search for [mu][sup +] [yields] e[sup +][gamma], is reported. Some ideas for a new experimental arrangement that has the potential to reach a sensitivity of 10[sup [minus]14] are presented.

Book Description
The MEGA experiment at LAMPF is the only current search for [mu][sup +][yields]e[sup +][gamma] underway. The limit on this rare muon-decay process tests the standard model of electroweak interactions. This report covers the status of the analysis of data taken in 1992 and the prospects for future improvements.

Cities and Their Vital Systems

Cities and Their Vital Systems PDF Author: Advisory Committee on Technology and Society
Publisher: National Academies Press
ISBN: 9780309037860
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 1298

Book Description
Cities and Their Vital Systems asks basic questions about the longevity, utility, and nature of urban infrastructures; analyzes how they grow, interact, and change; and asks how, when, and at what cost they should be replaced. Among the topics discussed are problems arising from increasing air travel and airport congestion; the adequacy of water supplies and waste treatment; the impact of new technologies on construction; urban real estate values; and the field of "telematics," the combination of computers and telecommunications that makes money machines and national newspapers possible.
