Ludwig I., who erected the wonderful Walhalla near Regensburg, had, by consistently patronising the Arts during his reign, transformed Munich, formerly nicknamed the Beer Town into a cultural centre. The events of 1 848, ending in the forced abdication of the first Bavarian king, placed his son Maximilian on the throne. He, although a follower of the then fashionable liberalism and surrounding himself with free-thinking counsellors, withstood the foundation of a German Em pire under Prussian leadership and refused to acknowledge the Imperial Constitution.
