Book Description
Excerpt from A Royal Pastoral, and Other Poems Invocation. Come, beardless Leader of the Sacred Nine, Unshorn Apollo, from thy heavenly hill, Once more to earth thine influence incline, And burning thoughts into my mind instil. Without thy kindly aid my voice must still Raise scarce an echo the low vales among, And like the purling of a puny rill That hardly glads the mead it creeps along, Without effect or force must flow my nameless song. Resume again thy long forsaken seat, Take up the sceptre thou wast wont to sway, Touch my young lip with accents pure and sweet, And grant me strength stern virtue to obey: Turn not thine ear from my request away, Vouchsafe me power to tune the Lyre Divine, To calm the passions cheer, the weary way, To pay to love the tributary line, To leave a name on earth when I its cares resign. English Pastoral Poetry (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: William Empson

Book Description
Excerpt from English Pastoral PoetryMany eople, without being communists, have irritated by the complacence in the massive calm of the poem, and this seems partly because they feel there is a cheat in the implied politics, the bourge01s themselves do not like literature to have too much bourgeois ideology' And yet what is said 1s one of the permanent truths; 1t is only 111 deg rce that any improvement of society could prevent wastage of human powers; the waste even in a fortunate life, the isolation even of a life rich in 1nt1macy, cannot but be felt deeply, and IS the central feeling of tragedy. And anything of value must accept this because it must not prostitute itself; its strength is to be prepared to waste itself, if it does not get its opportunity. A statement of this is certainly non political because it is true in any society, and yet nearly all the great poetic statements of it are in a way bour geois, like this one; they suggest to many readers, though they do not say, that for the poor man things cannot be improved even m degree. This at least shows that the distinction the communists try to draw is a puzzling one; two people may get very different experiences from the same work of art without either being definitely wrong. One is told that the Russ1ans now disapprove of tragedy, and that there was a per formance of Hamlet in the turk-sib region which the audience decided spontaneously was a farce. They may well hold out against the melancholy of old Russia, and for them there may be dangerous implications in any tragedy, which other people do not see. I am sure at any rate that one could not estimate the amount of bourgeois ideology really in the verse from Gray.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from A Dream of the Gironde and Other Poems Madame Roland. The years roll back, and I again am young: A merry child, yet thoughtful 'midst my glee, And bearing still about me a faint trace Of heaven, I left with tears - and a dim glance (They tell me) of that heaven in pensive eyes, And brow attuned to wonder, and low voice, Which ever knocked at hearts, and craved a place - In joy or sorrow, - only just a place, - A little niche - a cranny - there to rest - Nor feel alone in this wide earth of tears. And still that feeling lives, and still it leads Me from the abstract to the personal: I feel the urging of my woman soul Against the man's strong will, which must endure Tho' cast from kindred hearts, and all alone Forced to toil on; a blessing, but unbless'd: Until death lifts the curtain, and men feel What they could never see, and know too late The God's gift, which they counted all too poor For little human love to rest upon!... My God, Thou knowest that my soul is set, About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
