Book Description
Cutter Boutique Classics, a Fifth Avenue garment boutique owned by a group of wealthy Dutch citizens, needs help seeking American management. They enlist a prestigious New York law firm, and reluctantly Philip Bartlett becomes a principal in the contract. Philip is young and somewhat inexperienced, and this is not the dream assignment he's been waiting for. Due to his involvement with the boutique, his sister, Theresa, has a fleeting interlude with Chet Doyle, one of the boutique's Dutch owners. Neither Philip nor Theresa knows, however, that Chet is in charge of Cutter's shady dealings. To make matters worse, Theresa makes the acquaintance of the boutique's other owners and soon finds herself in the crosshairs of one of the two women-sisters from Amsterdam. Cutter's cash flow is massive, which draws the notice of the FBI. Investigations abound, and Philip is afraid for his career and his sister. Relationships are at times tender and yet tentative. It's sometimes hard to tell who comes out on top-especially when so many lives are involved.

Design Analysis in Rock Mechanics

Design Analysis in Rock Mechanics PDF Author: William G. Pariseau
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 1351796178
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 714

Book Description
This comprehensive introduction to rock mechanics treats the basics of rock mechanics in a clear and straightforward manner and discusses important design problems in terms of the mechanics of materials. This extended third edition includes an additional chapter on Foundations on Jointed Rock. Developed for a complete class in rock engineering, this volume uniquely combines the design of surface and underground rock excavations and addresses: • rock slope stability in surface excavations, from planar block and wedge slides to rotational and toppling failures • shaft and tunnel stability, ranging from naturally-supported openings to analysis and design of artificial support and reinforcement systems • entries and pillars in stratified ground • three-dimensional caverns, with emphasis on cable bolting and backfill • geometry and forces of chimney caving, combination support and trough subsidence • rock bursts and bumps in underground excavations, with focus on dynamic phenomena and on fast and sometimes catastrophic failures. The numerous exercises and examples familiarize the reader with solving basic practical problems in rock mechanics through various design analysis techniques and their applications. Supporting the main text, appendices provide supplementary information about rock, joint, and composite properties, rock mass classification schemes, useful formulas, and an extensive literature list. The large selection of problems at the end of each chapter can be used for home assignment. A solutions manual is available to course instructors. Explanatory and illustrative in character, this volume is suited for courses in rock mechanics, rock engineering and geological engineering design for undergraduate and first year graduate students in mining, civil engineering and applied earth sciences. Moreover, it will form a good introduction to the subject of rock mechanics for earth scientists and engineers from other disciplines.

Waste Disposal in Rock

Waste Disposal in Rock PDF Author: R. Pusch
Publisher: Newnes
ISBN: 044460037X
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 511

Book Description
This is an overview of all the important issues involved in selecting suitable sites, design and construction methods for preparing repositories for hazardous waste in crystalline rock. Most of the examples used refer to radioactive waste - this is a reflection of the experience of the author in this field as well as his belief that the same techniques could be used for isolation of radioactive and other hazardous waste. The focus is on the preparation and performance of multibarrier sytems of rock, waste containers and sealing components in a long-term perspective. Examples are provided from large-scale field experiments conducted in the international Stripa Project (a project to develop and test techniques for isolating highly radioactive waste). This monograph should be of particular interest to environmental geologists, structural geologists and civil engineers.

Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9401581290
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 584

Book Description
This new edition has been completely revised to reflect the notable innovations in mining engineering and the remarkable developments in the science of rock mechanics and the practice of rock angineering taht have taken place over the last two decades. Although "Rock Mechanics for Underground Mining" addresses many of the rock mechanics issues that arise in underground mining engineering, it is not a text exclusively for mining applications. Based on extensive professional research and teaching experience, this book will provide an authoratative and comprehensive text for final year undergraduates and commencing postgraduate stydents. For profesional practitioners, not only will it be of interests to mining and geological engineers, but also to civil engineers, structural mining geologists and geophysicists as a standard work for professional reference purposes.

Engineering Rock Mechanics

Engineering Rock Mechanics PDF Author: John P Harrison
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 0080530931
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 523

Book Description
Engineering Rock Mechanics Part II: Illustrative Worked Examples can be used as an independent book or alternatively it complements an earlier publication called Engineering Rock Mechanics: An Introduction to the Principles by the same authors. It contains illustrative worked examples of engineering rock mechanics in action as the subject applies to civil, mining, petroleum and environmental engineering. The book covers the necessary understanding and the key techniques supporting the rock engineering design of structural foundations, dams, rock slopes, wellbores, tunnels, caverns, hydroelectric schemes and mines. There is a question and worked answer presentation with the question and answer sets collated into twenty chapters which match the subject matter of the first book.

British Rock Modernism, 1967-1977

British Rock Modernism, 1967-1977 PDF Author: Barry J. Faulk
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1317171527
Category : Music
Languages : en
Pages : 192

Book Description
British Rock Modernism, 1967-1977 explains how the definitive British rock performers of this epoch aimed, not at the youthful rebellion for which they are legendary, but at a highly self-conscious project of commenting on the business in which they were engaged. They did so by ironically appropriating the traditional forms of Victorian music hall. Faulk focuses on the mid to late 1960s, when British rock bands who had already achieved commercial prominence began to aspire to aesthetic distinction. The book discusses recordings such as the Beatles' Magical Mystery Tour album, the Kinks' The Village Green Preservation Society, and the Sex Pistols' Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols, and television films such as the Beatles' Magical Mystery Tour and the Rolling Stones' Rock and Roll Circus that defined rock's early high art moment. Faulk argues that these 'texts' disclose the primary strategies by which British rock groups, mostly comprised of young working and lower middle-class men, made their bid for aesthetic merit by sampling music hall sounds. The result was a symbolically charged form whose main purpose was to unsettle the hierarchy that set traditional popular culture above the new medium. Rock groups engaged with the music of the past in order both to demonstrate the comparative vitality of the new form and signify rock's new art status, compared to earlier British pop music. The book historicizes punk rock as a later development of earlier British rock, rather than a rupture. Unlike earlier groups, the Sex Pistols did not appropriate music hall form in an ironic way, but the band and their manager Malcolm McLaren were obsessed with the meaning of the past for the present in a distinctly modernist fashion.
