Continuum modeling of the elastic-plastic behavior of fibrous composites is concerned with predictions of the macroscopic behavior of a composite aggregate, which consists of an elastic-plastic metal matrix reinforced by unidirectionally aligned elastic fibers. Mechanical properties and volume fractions of the phases are assumed to be known; the objective is to predict the overall response of the composite under incrementally applied uniform macroscopic stresses or strains in terms of the phase properties, and of the geometry of the microstructure. This paper reviews some recent solutions of this problem. Those include micromechanical models that derive the overall response from uniform local fields, and also models that approximate the actual non-uniform local fields and arrive at upper and lower bound solutions. Recent experimental results pertaining to plastic behavior of fibrous composite materials are also discussed.

This is the second of a three-part study of the plastic deformation of unidirectional fibrous composites made of isotropic, linearly elastic fibers, and an elastic- plastic, non-hardening matrix of the Mises type. The results obtained in the first part for the case of axisymmetric loading of the composite are extended and refined. A new kinematic Hardening Rule II is derived, and an associated flow rule is formulated. An approximate method for the evaluation of the microstresses in the composite is described. The theory is verified by comparison with exact, finite element plasticity solutions for a composite cylinder model of the Be-Al, and B-Al systems. The agreement between the approximate and exact results is very satisfactory. (Author-PL).

The field of composite materials has seen substantial development in the past decade, New composite systems are being continually developed for various applications. Among such systems are metal, intermetallic, and superalloy matrix composites, carbon-carbon composites as well as polymer matrix composites. At the same time, a new discipline has emerged of active or smart materials, which are often constructed as composite or heterogeneous media and structures. One unifying theme in these diverse systems is the influence that uncoupled and coupled eigenfields or transformation fields exert on the various types of overall response, as well as on the respective phase responses. Problems of this kind are currently considered by different groups which may not always appreciate the similarities of the problems involved. The purpose of the IUTAM Symposium on Transformation Problems in Composite and Active Materials held in Cairo, Egypt from March 10 to 12, 1997 was to bring together representatives of the different groups so that they may interact and explore common aspects of these seemingly different problem areas. New directions in micromechanics research in both composite and active materials were also explored in the symposium. The purpose of this research program was to establish experimentally verified constitutive relations for isothermal elastic-plastic behavior of metal matrix fibrous composite materials. The theoretical part of the work was concerned with development of new constitutive models of elastic-plastic fibrous composite materials. Our goal was to identify modeling techniques which would permit derivation of overall instantaneous mechanical properties of the aggregate in terms of microstructural geometry and the properties of the phases. Since most fibers remain elastic until failure, the inelastic overall strains are caused by plastic deformation of the matrix. Therefore, an important objective was to find connections between the elastic-plastic deformation of the neat matrix and the composite, and to develop models which would utilize such connections in predictions of the overall response. Also, among the possible approaches to the problem, it was necessary to identify those which would offer a guarantee of accuracy in applications involving incremental loading which could be verified experimentally.

Plastic deformation was studied in unidirectional fibrous composites made of isotropic, linearly elastic fibers, and an elastic-plastic, nonhardening matrix of the Mises type. Special attention was given to the effects of axisymmetric stress states. The composite exper-ienced kinematic hardening when loaded by axisymmetric composite stresses. A simple Hardening Rule I was derived and an associated flow rule was formulated. The results obtained from these rules were verified by comparison with exact finite element plasticity solutions for a cylindrical composite model of the B-A SYSTEM. Significant plastic macro-dilitation was found for certain loading directions in the axisymmetric composite stress plane. (Author, modified-PL).
