A Responsible End? PDF Author: Reidar Visser
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781935982036
Category : Iraq
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
In A Responsible End? the highly regarded expert on Iraq Reidar Visser tells the story of both the internal politics of Iraq and the United States' role and involvement in it. Many Americans had hoped that the 2005 elections would usher in an era of democracy in Iraq. But the aftermath of the elections was devastating for many Iraqis, as sectarian violence engulfed Baghdad and other key areas of the country in 2006-2007. Visser provides a clear analysis of the complex path Iraq's internal politics took during those seminal years and charts how, very often, Washington's policies ended up seriously weakening the very country that President Geroge W. Bush claimed he had come to save.

From Morality to the End of Reason

From Morality to the End of Reason PDF Author: Ingmar Persson
Publisher:
ISBN: 0199676550
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 337

Book Description
Ingmar Persson presents a new analysis of common sense morality—in particular the act-omission doctrine and the doctrine of double effect. He traces both doctrines to a theory of rights and a conception of responsibility as based on causation, and provides an original account of what it is to have a reason for action.

Action, Freedom and Responsibility

Action, Freedom and Responsibility PDF Author: Subasini Barik
Publisher: DK Printworld (P) Ltd
ISBN: 8124611122
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 175

Book Description
This book, a work on human doing, analyses and applies three central aspects of human life – Action, Freedom and Responsibility – in the wide spectrum of the Philosophy of Mind. Reflections on these issues and their interconnections have a significant effect on the Philosophy of Value and application of ethical theories in practical life. This book even reconstructs the conceptual connection between action and freedom, on the one hand, and that between freedom and responsibility, on the other. It also puts the concepts of freedom and determinism to critical test and reinterprets them from different angles and perspectives. The conventional doctrine of karma, based on the teachings of the BhagavadgÁtÀ, is relieved from its usual deterministic presentation and a logically reasonable explanation is offered. Human actions and human agency are central concepts in the philosophy of mind and action. Free will and responsibility constitute the bedrock of the moral life of the human agents and the book pinpoints that freedom is meant to undertake the goal-oriented actions. It is, therefore, focused on the enquiry into the various aspects of philosophy of mind, as well as the philosophy of value.

The End of the World

The End of the World PDF Author: Marcia Sa Cavalcante Schuback
Publisher: Rowman & Littlefield
ISBN: 1786602636
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 317

Book Description
The 'end of the world' opens up philosophical questions concerning the very notion of the world, which is a fundamental element of all existential, phenomenological and hermeneutical philosophy. Is the 'end of the world' for us 'somebody's' death (the end of 'being-in-the-world') or the extinction of many or of all (the end of the world itself)? Is the erosion of the 'world' a phenomenon that does not in fact affect the notion of the world as a fundamental feature of all existential-ontological inquiry? This volume examines the present state of these concerns in philosophy, film and literature. It presents a philosophical hermeneutics of the present state of the world and explores the principal questions of the philosophical accounts of the end of the world, such as finality and finitude. It also shows how literature and cinema have ventured to express the end of the world while asking if a consequent expression of the end of the world is also an end of its expression.

The End of Corporate Social Responsibility

The End of Corporate Social Responsibility PDF Author: Peter Fleming
Publisher: SAGE
ISBN: 1446290115
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 146

Book Description
Providing a much-needed critique of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) practice and scholarship, this book seeks to redress CSR advocacy, from a political and critical perspective. A strident approach backed up by extensive use of case studies presents the argument that most CSR-related activity aims to gain legitimacy from consumers and employees, and therefore furthers the exploitative and colonizing agenda of the corporation. By examining CSR in the context of the political economy of late capitalism, the book puts the emphasis back on the fact that most large corporations are fundamentally driven by profit maximization, making CSR initiatives merely another means to this end. Rather than undermining or challenging unsustainable corporate practices CSR is exposed as an ideological practice that actually upholds the prominence of such practices. As CSR gathers momentum in management practice and scholarship, students in the fields of CSR, business ethics, and strategy, will find this text a useful companion to counter received wisdom in this area.

Agency and Responsibility

Agency and Responsibility PDF Author: Jeanette Kennett
Publisher: Clarendon Press
ISBN: 0191658774
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 238

Book Description
Is it ever possible for people to act freely and intentionally against their better judgement? Is it ever possible to act in opposition to one's strongest desire? If either of these questions are answered in the negative, the common-sense distinctions between recklessness, weakness of will and compulsion collapse. This would threaten our ordinary notion of self-control and undermine our practice of holding each other responsible for moral failure. So a clear and plausible account of how weakness of will and self-control are possible is of great practical significance. Taking the problem of weakness of will as her starting point, Jeanette Kennett builds an admirably comprehensive and integrated account of moral agency which gives a central place to the capacity for self-control. Her account of the exercise and limits of self-control vindicates the common-sense distinction between weakness of will and compulsion and so underwrites our ordinary allocations of moral responsibility. She addresses with clarity and insight a range of important topics in moral psychology, such as the nature of valuing and desiring, conceptions of virtue, moral conflict, and the varieties of recklessness (here characterised as culpable bad judgement) - and does so in terms which make their relations to each other and to the challenges of real life obvious. Agency and Responsibility concludes by testing the accounts developed of self-control, moral failure, and moral responsibility against the hard cases provided by acts of extreme evil.

Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 357

Others explore libertarian views about political freedom and accountability, while still others examine the notion of partial or divided responsibility, or the relationship between responsibility and the emotions.

Power and Responsibility

Technology and Responsibility

Technology and Responsibility PDF Author: P.T. Durbin
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9401569401
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 387

Book Description
Since it may seem strange for a new series to begin with volume 3, a word of explanation is in order. The series, Philosophy and Technology, inaugurated in this form with this volume, is the official publication of the Society for Philosophy & Technology. Approximately one volume each year is tobe published, alternating between proceedings volumes - taken from contributions to biennial international conferences of the Society - and miscellaneous volumes, with roughly the character of a professional society journal. The forerunners of the series in its present form were two proceedings volumes: Philosophy and Technology (1983), edited by Paul T. Durbin and Friedrich Rapp, and Philosophy and Technology //: Information Technology and Computers in Theory and Practice (1986), edited by Carl Mitcham and Alois Huning - both published (as volumes 80 and 90, respectively) in the series, Boston Studies in the Philosophy of Science. The Society for Philosophy & Technology, now more than ten years old, is devoted to the promotion of philosophical schalarship that deals in one way or another with technology and technological society. "Philosophical scholarship" is interpreted broadly as including contribu tions from any and all perspectives; the one requirement is that the schalarship be sound, and all contributions to the series are subject to rigorous blind refereeing. "Technology," the other half of the philos ophy-and-technology pairing, is also construed broadly.
