Structure and Flow of Data Through an Environmental Data Management System

Structure and Flow of Data Through an Environmental Data Management System PDF Author:

Pages : 7

Book Description
Efficient data management is crucial to environmental investigations. The management system must provide for organized data tracking, storage, and retrieval of data essential to successful environmental management. Ultimately, the system is used as an environmental management tool for remediation decisionmaking. This paper will describe the structure and flow of data in the data management system used by the Environmental Restoration Division of the Environmental Protection Department of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL). The structure is based on three relational databases that are closely correlated. The first database handles sample tracking. The second database handles nondiscrete data, such as sample location, media, analytical results, and some geological information. These two databases are maintained on a VAX 63 10 with VMS, using INGRES relational database software. The third database handles nondiscrete data like graphic imaging flies and geophysical logs and will be run on an IPC Sparc, using INGRES. The flow of data, both hard copy and electronic, follows a model that tracks information from sampling plan through decisionmaking (Fig. 1). The steps in the process include chain-of-custody (CoC) tracking of the sample, receipt of analytical results, application of quality control procedures. and electronic use of data in decision support tools, such as graphic imaging, model development and verification, or statistical analysis.

Managing Environmental Data

Managing Environmental Data PDF Author: Gerald A. Burnette
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 1000476170
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 338

Book Description
Focused on the mechanics of managing environmental data, this book provides guidelines on how to evaluate data requirements, assess tools and techniques, and implement an effective system. Moving beyond the hypothetical, Gerald Burnette illustrates the decision-making processes and the compromises required when applying environmental principles and practices to actual data. Managing Environmental Data explains the basic principles of relational databases, discusses database design, explores user interface options, and examines the process of implementation. Best practices are identified during each portion of the process. The discussion is summarized via the development of a hypothetical environmental data management system. Details of the design help establish a common framework that bridges the gap between data managers, users, and software developers. It is an ideal text for environmental professionals and students. The growth in both volume and complexity of environmental data presents challenges to environmental professionals. Developing better data management skills offers an excellent opportunity to meet these challenges. Gaining knowledge of and experience with data management best practices complements students’ more traditional science education, providing them with the skills required to address complex data requirements.

Long Term Resource Monitoring Program Component Database Spatial Query Tool User's Guide

Long Term Resource Monitoring Program Component Database Spatial Query Tool User's Guide PDF Author: Douglas A. Olsen
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Geographic information systems
Languages : en
Pages : 32

Book Description
The Environmental Management Technical Center stores point sampled data for fisheries, water quality, and invertebrates in a relational database management system. These component data are collected at fixed and random sites in each of the key Long Term Resource Monitoring Program (LTRMP) study pools: 4, 8, 13, 26, and the open river reach on the Mississippi River; and the La Grange Pool on the Illinois River. While the geographic locations of these data are also collected and stored, the tools to automate the integration of these data with spatial data had not previously been developed. A need existed for an application that would facilitate spatial subsetting and visualization of the distribution of sites meeting certain query criteria. The LTRMF Component Database Spatial Query Tool is a Unix based ARC/INFO ARC Macro Language application that integrates the component data with spatial data by taking advantage of the graphical display and query capabilities of ARC/INFO. The application features an easy to use graphical user interface and requires only very basic knowledge of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to use effectively.

Environmental Data Management

Environmental Data Management PDF Author: Nilgun B. Harmanciogammalu
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9401590567
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 443

Book Description
The diverse nature of environmental problems mankind has encountered within the last decade has developed a new understanding of the nature of environmental processes. Currently, the environment is considered as a continuum of air, soil and water as the vital components for sustaining life on earth. The interactive nature of these components requires that the environment is managed and protected as a cohesive whole. This can only be accomplished through an integrated approach to environmental management. Besides the concept of environmental continuum, prospects for sustainable development of natural resources and the recent recognition of global climate change impacts have also necessitated such an integrated approach to environmental management. Two basic tools for integrated management of the environment are modeling and environmental data. Both tools were available and valid in the past; however, the recent requirements for integrated environmental management have also led to a significant evolution of both modeling procedures and data management systems.

Chukchi Sea Environmental Data Management in a Relational Database

Chukchi Sea Environmental Data Management in a Relational Database PDF Author: Fengyan Yang
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 140

Book Description
Environmental data hold important information regarding humanity's past, present, and future, and are managed in various ways. The database structure most commonly used in contemporary applications is the relational database. Its usage in the scientific world for managing environmental data is not as popular as in businesses enterprises. Attention is caught by the diverse nature and rapidly growing volume of environmental data that has been increasing substantially in recent. Environmental data for the Chukchi Sea, with its embedded potential oil resources, have become important for characterizing the physical, chemical, and biological environment. Substantive data have been collected recently by researchers from the Chukchi Sea Offshore Monitoring in the Drilling Area: Chemical and Benthos (COMIDA CAB) project. A modified Observations Data Model was employed for storing, retrieving, visualizing and sharing data. Throughout the project-based study, the processes of environmental data heterogeneity reconciliation and relational database model modification and implementation were carried out. Data were transformed into shareable information, which improves data interoperability between different software applications (e.g. ArcGIS and SQL server). The results confirm the feasibility and extendibility of employing relational databases for environmental data management.
