Theatrical Unrest

Theatrical Unrest PDF Author: Sean McEvoy
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1317428609
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 196

Book Description
Shortlisted for the 2017 Theatre Book Prize What is it about theatre, compared to other kinds of cultural representation, which provokes such a powerful reaction? Theatrical Unrest tells the compelling tales of ten riots whose cause lies on stage. It looks at the intensity and evanescence of the live event and asks whether theatre shares its unrepeatable quality with history. Tracing episodes of unrest in theatrical history from an Elizabethan uprising over Shakespeare's Richard II to Sikhs in revolt at Gurpreet Kaur Bhatti's Behzti, Sean McEvoy chronicles a selection of extreme public responses to this inflammatory art form. Each chapter provides a useful overview of the structure and documentation of one particular event, juxtaposing eyewitness accounts with newspaper reports and other contemporary narratives. Theatrical Unrest is an absorbing account of the explosive impact of performance, and an essential read for anyone interested in theatre’s often violent history.

Book Description
In this sequel to A River of Royal Blood, Eva and Isa must find a way to work together if they want to save their queendom in the thrilling conclusion to this royal fantasy duology. Now on the run, Eva is desperate for answers about her transformation and her true heritage. Along with Aketo, a small contingent of guards, and the sister she could not kill, Eva flees Ternain in hopes of finding friends and allies to the north--not to mention Baccha--to help her decide what to do next. Princess Isa is a difficult, unremorseful captive, and Eva knows better than to trust her sister, but she wants to. Despite their history, Eva is convinced that to survive the growing unrest in the queendom, she and her sister must make peace. Since the Entwining ceremony, Eva's and Isa's lives have been bonded, and each can only die by the other's hand. This perhaps provides an opening for a truce and a more hopeful future for both the sisters and the queendom, if only Isa would see reason and give up the battle for the throne. With the two princesses on the run, the Queendom of Myre is on the brink of a revolution. And without Baccha to guide and train her magick, Eva must find a way not only to survive her own metamorphosis, but to unite all the people of Myre, including her sister, by finally taking the Ivory Throne.

CHAPTER III Journey to Spain--Cambrai--St Quentin--Compiegne--St Denis--Paris --Incidents of Visit--Louis XII.--Anne of Brittany--Arrival of Blois--Ceremonies and Pleasures at the Court--Navarre--Frontier Welcome--Medina del Campo--Philip ill--Meeting with Ferdinand--State Entry into Toledo--Meeting between Queen and Juana. The preparation for the journey to Spain (taken chiefly from an account by Antoine de Lailand) went on apace. The route was mapped out, and the towns where hospitality would be accepted were informed of the royal decree. The 15th of September 1501 was the day chosen for the departure, and the Flemish town from which the cortege set forth was a moving mass of kaleidoscopic colour while the procession was being arranged in marching order. Finally all was in readiness awaiting the Archduke and his Archduchess, who soon descended into the courtyard, and after a momentary pause, the cortege moving through the castle gateway, were met with ringing shouts of "God-speed." It did not take long to traverse the narrow streets and gain the opencountry, where the peasants ceased work to watch the cavalcade brighten the autumnal landscape. The Archduchess was happy, and over her stole one of those sudden outbursts of passionate affection, more irritating to Philip than the silence which held her when wounded at the sight of his passing affection for some favoured lady of the royal household -- though in mediaeval days the presence of a mistress at Court or the acknowledgment of an illegitimate child were matters of everyday occurrence, and considered of little import. In the waning afternoon light the small town of Hals was seen, its Gothic church against the sky-line; and soon the cavalcade rattled over its cobble-stoned streets, ...
