Burnout in accounting is a significant problem that has numerous impacts on organizational effectiveness. Job burnout is the result of prolonged exposure to workload pressure and excessive job demands. As accounting professionals work in a fast-paced and regulated environment, it is important to better understand whether burnout is related to job dissatisfaction within the industry. Employee dissatisfaction can adversely affect organizational change, impacting job performance, turnover intentions, and work attitudes. Organizations need to recognize the negative impacts of burnout in accounting and address ways to increase job satisfaction and workplace productivity. The purpose of this quantitative research was to investigate the relationship between perceived burnout and job satisfaction in Certified Public Accountants (CPAs) in California. Survey data were collected using Maslach’s Burnout Inventory and the Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire, and correlational analysis was used to examine the relationship between the three dimensions of burnout and job satisfaction. The results of this research support earlier research, indicated by a statistically significant negative relationship between exhaustion and job satisfaction, and also between cynicism and job satisfaction. The results further indicated a statistically significant positive relationship between perceived professional efficacy and job satisfaction. This research may encourage organizational leaders to implement business policies that promote human resource management practices designed to alleviate burnout, improve job satisfaction, and promote retention of CPAs.

This quantitative correlational research study aimed to address the lack of work-life balance among public accounting professionals, potentially resulting in burnout and increased turnover intentions. A lack of work-life balance, burnout, and turnover has long been associated with the public accounting profession. This study looked to add to the body of knowledge by looking specifically at Certified Public Accountants (CPAs) registered with the Texas State Board of Public Accountancy (TSBPA) who currently work for public accounting firms. The study utilized information gathered from three valid and reliable survey instruments: the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI), Work-Life Balance Questionnaire, and Turnover Intention Questionnaire. The findings indicated a statistically significant relationship between work-life balance and burnout and work-life balance and turnover; however, the largest relationship was found between the two dependent variables, burnout and turnover. The findings are important to further understand and reduce the high employee turnover experienced by the accounting industry. This research reveals the areas in which public accounting firms should focus their human resource initiatives to improve the future of the public accounting industry.

Scholars and practitioners agree burnout is a significant problem plaguing the public accounting industry. Burnout is a condition that results from long periods of excessive strain on personal resources, and is often found in public accounting professionals due to the high stress and deadline-driven environment. As the causes for burnout are better understood, the focus has turned to why some individuals are more likely to burnout than others. Identifying who has a tendency to burnout can only help in the quest for solutions. The purpose of this correlational quantitative study was to test the theoretical framework of Maslach and Jackson (1981) by examining the relationship between gender, age, and burnout in a large, national public accounting firm in the United States. Data was collected through anonymous surveys of the client-service professionals of one large, national public accounting firm, and analysis included multiple regression models using age and gender as the independent variables, and the three dimensions of burnout as the dependent variables. Only a weak correlation was identified between age and the dimensions of burnout, while an even weaker correlation resulted between gender and the dimensions of burnout. The results of the study indicated that young, female are more likely to experience the characteristics of burnout, but the regression models were not deemed reliable for use in predicting burnout using age and gender. The data analysis indicated that additional independent variables would be needed to reliably predict the dimensions of burnout within the surveyed population.

Since Kahn introduced the concept of employee engagement in 1990, the focus on motivating employees has been en vogue in practitioner literature. The federal government as well now measures its agencies annually on how well they implement conditions conducive to engagement. Federal agencies are also ranked annually as "Best Places to Work" based on their aggregated score on three survey items deemed to represent job/organizational satisfaction. The concept of burnout, or the so-called "erosion of engagement", however, has received significantly less attention. To begin to fill this void in the literature, secondary survey data from the 2017 Organizational Assessment Survey administered to the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command (SPAWAR) in San Diego, California was examined. Specifically, the focus of this study was the Headquarters (HQ)/Program Executive Office (PEO) survey, for which 870 out of 1111 military and civilian personnel responded for an overall response rate of 78%. Using factor analytic techniques on the 122 survey items, this study first identified groupings of survey items to construct a potential burnout index, and a sufficiently high Cronbach's Alpha confirmed the internal consistency of the resultant burnout index. The study then examined demographic differences in employees' perceptions of burnout, engagement conditions, and job/organizational satisfaction. Finally, regression analysis was used to test whether burnout moderates the relationship between engagement conditions and job/organizational satisfaction. Demographic variables such as HQ organizational code, age, tenure, and intent to leave were significant predictors. While results indicated burnout does not have a significant interaction effect with engagement conditions on job/organizational satisfaction for the overall SPAWAR HQ/PEO workforce, the moderating interaction was detected for one of its HQ organizational codes. The results of this research will help those federal agencies directed to spend time, effort and taxpayer dollars to increase employee engagement. The study's significance lies in its potential to contribute to the understanding of burnout as a potential moderator of employee engagement.

This research tests a model of turnover intentions for accountants' motivated by the belief that understanding the turnover phenomenon among accountants' may help personnel managers and manpower planners design effective retention strategies. It may also provide occupational counselors and prospective job seekers a better perspective on the nature and requirements of jobs in accounting. The purpose of this study is to investigate the links between perceived discrimination, job satisfaction and turnover intention at public accounting firms in Turkey. The primary discrimination issue discussed in the study is the perceived fairness of decisions involving pay and promotions. Fairness is examined in terms of the consistent application of standards across individuals in the firm's decision-making. To explore these issues, a survey was distributed to 600 members of accounting profession operating in various districts of Turkey selected randomly. The authors' analysis resulting from 240 accountants suggest that 1) perceived discrimination positively affects accountants turnover intentions 2) perceived discrimination negatively affects accountants job satisfaction and 3) accountants job satisfaction negatively affects their turnover intentions.
