Work life balance - any improve for business? PDF Author: Fatma Torun

Pages : 15

Book Description
Essay from the year 2004 in the subject Leadership and Human Resources - Miscellaneous, grade: Good, University of East London, language: English, abstract: The role of work and the workplace have changed throughout the world due to economic conditions and social demands. Global competition, renewed interest in personal lives and family values and an ageing workforce are factors which contribute to the serious consideration of equilibrium between work and life (Lockwood, 2003). The challenge of work-life balance is rising to the top of many employees’ and employers’ consciousness. Employees are placing more value on quality of working life and seeking for greater flexibility so that they can manage work commitments along personal life. Employers, on the contrary, need in today’s economic climate a workforce that is stable and committed but also more adaptable and flexible to meet business challenges. Finding the right balance between work responsibilities and the demands on personal lives is conclusively becoming a significant issue (Loghran, 2002). Therefore, at the core of human resource strategy lays the need to consider work-life balance for employees. One of the vehicles to help provide attainment of personal and professional goals are work-life programmes. But why should organisations follow this work-life trend? Is it a critical business issue or simply the “right thing to do”? Which potential business improvement does work-life programmes offer to organisations? The aim of this report is to analyse the benefits for employers when implementing work-life balance programmes. Therefore, the concept of work-life balance will be defined and the potential business benefits will be analysed. Based on this analysis, this report will show that organisations can gain a competitive advantage when offering work-life initiatives.

ISBN: 9781557989277
Category : Psychology
Languages : en
Pages : 475

Book Description
Occupational health psychology is a relatively young specialty within the science and practice of psychology. This handbook is designed to consolidate and organize the emerging knowledge in the field from the interdisciplinary perspectives of an international group of scholars and researchers. Part I includes 5 chapters designed to provide historical, contemporary, and future-oriented perspectives on this emerging specialty after first discussing prevention and public health in occupational settings. Part II includes 6 chapters that address key causes of health and safety at work as well as key risks to health and safety, focusing on factors both within the specific workplace as well as broader occupational factors and factors from the personal life domain. Regardless of how effectively organizations design prevention and public health programs to protect the health and safety of people at work, some experience symptoms and health disorders. The first 2 chapters in Part III focus on two key symptoms or health disorders, and the remaining 4 chapters address specific primary, secondary, or tertiary interventions for health and safety. The volume concludes with a 3-chapter part addressing issues of epidemiology, program evaluation, and socioeconomic cost-benefit analysis. Book Description
Work-life balance of entrepreneurs is a topic of high interest in both theory and practice. However, empirical findings are rare and often contradictory. This study investigates the work-life balance of different groups of self-employed in comparison to wage-employed individuals using a large European dataset. We find that work-life balance is lower for all types of self-employed in comparison to wage-employed individuals. In particular, self-employed individuals with employees have the lowest work-life balance. Our results have important implications for entrepreneurship research.

Book Description
What are the effects of conflict between home and work? Does work stress affect those who live with you? In the rapidly changing modern work environment, time pressures seem ever increasing and new technology allows work to be conducted any time and anywhere. These are just two of the factors that make it more and more difficult for working men and women to integrate work and home life. Consequently, there is a need for flexible and innovative solutions to manage the work-home interface. Work-Life Balance: A Psychological Perspective presents up-to-date information on work-home issues, including the latest research findings. The book’s emphasis is strongly psychological, with a focus on practical solutions, and includes chapters which deal with psychological issues such as the conflict between work and family, how work stresses may affect partners, and recovery from work. It also includes sections on legal issues, as well as examples of initiatives being implemented by leading employers. Contributors are drawn from the leading researchers in their fields and reflect the international character of the current challenges facing employers and employees. Its practical focus and innovative approach make this an essential book for managers, HR professionals and organizational psychologists, as well as students in these disciplines. The theoretical basis and research focus mean the book will also be invaluable for researchers investigating workplace issues.

This collection maps the increasingly extensive discussion of work-life issues for professionals and discusses key aspects in depth. What is work-life integration? What are the specific challenges for professionals? How do they manage their blurred work-life boundaries? How can companies intervene? Internationally leading authors discuss antecedents and individual and organizational outcomes of work-life integration, gender-specific perspectives and challenges as well as the use and usefulness of corporate work-life balance initiatives. In five sections distinguished researchers from across the world present experiences and research findings to provide a compendium of academic and applied research on the work-life integration of professionals.
