Book Description
The United States Naval Academy is the premier source of officers for the Naval service. It is a four-year total immersion educational experience designed to develop midshipmen morally, mentally, and physically and prepare them for service as either a Naval or Marine Corps officer. The Fourth-Class Indoctrination (Plebe Summer) program is the first military training evolution for most members of the incoming plebe class. The seven-week indoctrination course is intended to provide and introduction to military and academy culture as well as to prepare fourth-class midshipmen for integration into the brigade of midshipmen. This research uses detailed literature reviews and expert interviews to identify the objectives and performance measurement procedures of Plebe Summer. Next it evaluates the performance measurement and outcome management procedures employed by the Naval Academy in assessing Plebe Summer success. Evaluated in this research are the objectives, outcomes, outcome indicators, data collection procedures, and benchmarks applied to the Plebe Summer program. The research indicates that a performance measurement and outcome management system can assist Naval Academy leaders in improving the quality of the Plebe Summer program.

Predictors of Plebe Summer Attrition at the United States Naval Academy

Predictors of Plebe Summer Attrition at the United States Naval Academy PDF Author: Michael P. Hollenbach

Languages : en
Pages : 87

Book Description
This thesis analyzes the relationship between entry-level variables available to the Office of Admissions and plebe summer attrition at the United States Naval Academy (USNA). The study used independent samples t-tests and linear regression analysis to analyze the effects of individual variables on plebe summer attrition and also used binary logistic regression to develop an overall predictive model of plebe summer attrition. Analysis was conducted on the USNA classes that completed plebe summer from 1995-2002 (N = 9,554). The results of this study indicate the highest plebe summer attrition is attributed to majority females, females in general and midshipmen who exceed the limits of the height/weight table and are not recruited athletes. The lowest plebe summer attrition rates are found among children of service academy graduates, recruited varsity athletes, summer seminar attendees, minority males and older midshipmen. This study summarizes the results and also offers recommendations to the Naval Academy and for future research.

Performance Measurement for the Company Officer PDF Author: James A. Belz
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781423543343
Category : Command of troops
Languages : en
Pages : 90

Book Description
This research will first examine the historical role of the United States Naval Academy in developing future naval leaders. The organization of the Naval Academy will be illustrated to provide an understanding of the framework in which the leadership abilities of the midshipmen are developed. The role of the company officer in developing midshipmen will then be introduced. Performance management with performance measurement as a tool for improvement will then be examined in terms of the mission of the academy and role of the company officer. This research will then examine the current performance measurement methods employed by Company Officers at the United States Naval Academy and how these methods factor into improved midshipman leadership development. Research will include conducting a detailed analysis of the role of the company officer in midshipman leadership development. Data will be collected and analyzed using a performance measurement approach. The results of this analysis will enable company officers to develop new measurement ideas with the focus on improving the midshipmen leadership development process.

Book Description
For one hundred fifty-seven years, the United States Naval Academy has been producing junior officers to serve in United States Navy and Marine Corps fleet commands. Each year, more than 1,200 new midshipmen are inducted into the four-year, total immersion process. Overseeing every aspect of midshipman life is a dedicated and experienced officer and senior enlisted core, The 4,200 midshipmen in the brigade are divided into thirty companies; each led by a fleet experienced junior officer. These Company Officers play a pivotal role in the education, leadership and training of their midshipmen. This research extracts the current measures employed to assess these Company Officers by way of a thorough review of USNA instructions, previous theses, popular literature, and expert interviews, These interviews were conducted with both Battalion and Company Officers via a specific set of uniform questions. Data obtained from interviews were analyzed qualitatively using content analysis in order to identify themes and patterns. Identification and explanation of these measures will assist current and perspective Company Officers in performing their duties more effectively and providing a better product to their midshipmen.

Category : Achievement motivation
Languages : en
Pages : 99

Book Description
As the primary source of officers for the Navy and Marine Corps team, the Naval Academy's reputation is marked by the quality of its graduates. At the United States Naval Academy, the Color Company Competition annually honors the highest performing company within the Brigade of Midshipmen. This competition includes measures of academic, athletic and professional measures of performance. Using data obtained through the Institutional Research Department, the Physical Education Department, as well as the Activities and Operations Offices, this study examines the validity of the current performance measurement tool at the Academy. Through the use of linear regression models, this study found that the current procedures do meet the intent of published guidance but that those procedures require revision and updating. Conclusions and recommendations for future improvement are provided at the completion of the study. Included as a recommendation is a proposed program combining both the Color Company Competition and the Company Incentive Program. This program and other initiatives are intended to intensify the Naval Academy's focus on fostering esprit de corps and improving the development of midshipmen.

A Quantitative Analysis of the Impact of the Summer Training Program on Midshipmen Service Selecting at the United States Naval Academy

Pages : 99

Book Description
This thesis examined the effect of the Summer Training Program on the vocational development of midshipmen at the United States Naval Academy. Data from 355 First Class midshipmen were analyzed to examine the impact of the Summer Training Program on United States Naval Academy Midshipmen career choices. It was hypothesized that the Summer Training Program would have a significant impact on career selection after controlling for the effects of demographic, academic and military factors. Results of hierarchical regression analyses indicate that the Summer Training Program had a differential impact on Midshipmen's career choice. Specifically, it was found that participating in career relevant training had a significant impact on both tentative career choice and final career choice. All of the Summer Training Programs were found to be significant in the study. The results suggest that the greatest impact for career choice was on those midshipmen that participated in Leatherneck Summer Training Program.

Improving Leadership Training at the United States Naval Academy by Utilizing Interactive Multimedia Instruction (IMI)

Improving Leadership Training at the United States Naval Academy by Utilizing Interactive Multimedia Instruction (IMI) PDF Author: Shannon E. Kawane
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781423542438
Category : Computer-assisted instruction
Languages : en
Pages : 178

Book Description
This thesis addresses several issues identified in the analysis and design phases of the Instructional Systems Development process to develop an IMI leadership program for the Naval Academy. The overarching goal is to provide the Naval Academy with a study that uses current research and existing innovative leadership programs to answer questions that need to be resolved in developing a program consistent with the Naval Academy's leadership training philosophy. The results suggest that an IMI program can be developed that is consistent with the Naval Academy's leadership development program. The IMI leadership program must incorporate learning theories utilized by midshipmen including observational learning and the Experiential Learning Model. Of the leadership training methods reviewed, the most promising include role playing, simulation, and behavior modeling implemented through interactive multimedia instruction. It was concluded that an IMI leadership program must include learning objectives that take into account not only the theories of leadership taught at the Naval Academy, but also the situational components of leadership. Methods for developing scenarios consistent with the many leadership and counseling theories taught at the Naval Academy, linking past decisions to selection of future scenarios, modeling personality, and providing effective feedback to the midshipmen and the Naval Academy for performance measurement are discussed.
