A Primer on Money, Banking, and Gold (Peter L. Bernstein's Finance Classics)

A Primer on Money, Banking, and Gold (Peter L. Bernstein's Finance Classics) PDF Author: Peter L. Bernstein
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 0470435208
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 175

Book Description
One of the foremost financial writers of his generation, Peter Bernstein has the unique ability to synthesize intellectual history and economics with the theory and practice of investment management. Now, with classic titles such as Economist on Wall Street, A Primer on Money, Banking, and Gold, and The Price of Prosperity—which have forewords by financial luminaries and new introductions by the author—you can enjoy some of the best of Bernstein in his earlier Wall Street days. With the proliferation of financial instruments, new areas of instability, and innovative capital market strategies, many economists and investors have lost sight of the fundamentals of the financial system—its strengths as well as its weaknesses. A Primer on Money, Banking, and Gold takes you back to the beginning and sorts out all the pieces. Peter Bernstein skillfully addresses how and why commercial banks lend and invest, where money comes from, how it moves from hand to hand, and the critical role of interest rates. He explores the Federal Reserve System and the consequences of the Fed's actions on the overall economy. But this book is not just about the past. Bernstein's novel perspective on gold and the dollar is critical for today's decision makers, as he provides extensive views on the future of money, banking, and gold in the world economy. This illuminating story about the heart of our economic system is essential reading at a time when developments in finance are more important than ever.

Book Description
Excerpt from Public School Finance in Minnesota: Summary of a Report Prepared for the Minnesota Education Association Committee on School Tax and Sources of School Support It would seem that Minnesota ought to be willing to be compared with Iowa, North Dakota, Nebraska, South Dakota, and Wisconsin. If we take these five states together with Minnesota, we shall have a group of six. In this group, we find that in the year 1920, Minnesota stood fourth, or only two ranks from the bottom of the list as to the amount of money she spent for each child enrolled in school, fifth as to the percent of her school population actually enrolled, and sixth, i.e., last in the group, as to the length of school year in days. The District of Columbia and forty-eight states give us forty-nine units composing our Union. Where does Minne sota rank in this group' of forty-nine? The Federal Bureau of Education gathers facts covering the entire United States. The last year for which such facts have been gathered is the year 1920. These facts have not yet been published by the United States Bureau of Education, but are taken from tables furnished privately to the writers of the present account by the Bureau of Education. The Control of City School Finances (Classic Reprint)

The Control of City School Finances (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: George Willard Frasier
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9781528485920
Category : Reference

Pages : 144

Book Description
Excerpt from The Control of City School Finances The public schools of America cost money. This cost has constantly increased until today it involves a vast expenditure. Americans no longer doubt the advisability of public schools, but the question of financing these schools is a vital one. It is not the purpose of this book to discuss the merits of different methods of providing funds for the public schools. It shall attempt only to discuss the merits of the different methods of controlling these moneys. In New York City the board of esti mate and apportionment controls the granting of money to the schools; in Detroit it is the city council and mayor; in Cleveland it is the county budget commission; in Newark it is the board of school estimate; while in such cities as Philadelphia, Seattle, Chicago and St. Louis, the board of educa tion raises and expends its own funds. The question as to who shall control the raising g and disbursing of moneys for the public schools is, and has been for years, a much debated question. It is the purpose of this book to present the different methods used in American cities and to examine and evaluate each in the light of educational efficiency. Book Description
Excerpt from State Policies in Public School Finance The vast increases in school expenditure revealed by Table 1 are the result of the interaction of many different factors - the rapid increase both in total and in school population, the lengthening of the legal school year, the extension and increasingly effective enforcement of compulsory education laws, the placing by the community upon the school of a larger and larger number of functions, resulting In the introduction of many new types of studies and activities. It is impossible to consider here these various factors and the part they have played in increasing school costs. We may, however, show what is perhaps the most influential of all the above factors, namely, the growth in average attendance. In like manner, the increase in the annual average expenditure per Child epitomizes the net result of the interaction of most, if not all, of the factors at work} Data bearing upon these two factors are gathered together in Table 2, which shows by 10-year periods the increase from 1870 to 1918 in (1) the number of children in average attendance, (2) the annual expenditure per child in attendance, (3) the total annual expenditure. Rumors in Financial Markets

Rumors in Financial Markets PDF Author: Mark Schindler
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 9780470510339
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 210

Book Description
On the trading floor, all action is based on news, therefore rumors in financial markets are an everyday phenomenon. Rumors are the oldest mass medium in the world and their nature is still difficult to grasp. Scientifically, not much is known about rumors, especially in the financial markets, where their consequences can have real money consequences. Rumors in Financial Markets provides a fresh insight to the topic, combining the theory of Behavioral Finance with that of Experimental Finance--a new and innovative scientific method which observes real decision makers in a controlled, clearly structured environment. Using the results from surveys and experiments, the author argues that rumors in the context of financial markets are built on three cornerstones: Finance, Psychology and Sociology. The book provides insights into how rumors evolve, spread and are traded on and provides explanations as to why volatility rockets, strong price movements, herding behavior for example, occur for apparently no good reason.
