Book Description
In this dissertation, a measurement of the partial decay width of the process Z0 → [tau]+[tau]- using data collected during 1993 and 1994 at the OPAL detector at CERN is described. The cross sections of this process at three center-of-mass energies near the Z0 resonance were determined, and from a fit to those cross sections, the mass of the Z0, its total decay width and its partial decay width into [tau]+[tau]- final states were determined as MZ = 91.183 ± 0.020 GeV, [Gamma]tot = 2.514 ± 0.018 GeV and [Gamma][tau][tau] = 84.54 ± 0.59 MeV. Using published results for MZ, and [Gamma]tot with higher accuracy, a value for the partial decay width of [Gamma][tau][tau] = 84.02 ± 0.20 MeV was obtained. Further using published results for the decay width of the Z0 into quark pair final states, the invisible decay width of the Z0 was determined as [Gamma]inv = 496.9 ± 4.1 MeV, and the number of neutrino generations was determined as Nv = 2.974 ± 0.025(exp) ± 0.007 (mtop, MHiggs). All results were found to be in good agreement with the Standard Model predictions and were consistent with the assumption of lepton universality within the Standard Model framework.

Mass Spectrometry

Mass Spectrometry PDF Author: Jürgen H Gross
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3540407391
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 534

Book Description
Mass Spectrometry is an ideal textbook for students and professionals as well as newcomers to the field. Starting from the very first principles of gas-phase ion chemistry and isotopic properties, the textbook takes the reader through the design of mass analyzers and ionization methods all the way to mass spectral interpretation and coupling techniques. Step-by-step, the reader learns how mass spectrometry works and what it can do. The book comprises a balanced mixture of practice-oriented information and theoretical background. It features a clear layout and a wealth of high-quality figures. Exercises and solutions are located on the Springer Global Web.

The Principles of Quantum Mechanics

The Principles of Quantum Mechanics PDF Author: Paul Adrien Maurice Dirac
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 9780198520115
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 340

Book Description
The first edition of this work appeared in 1930, and its originality won it immediate recognition as a classic of modern physical theory. The fourth edition has been bought out to meet a continued demand. Some improvements have been made, the main one being the complete rewriting of the chapter on quantum electrodymanics, to bring in electron-pair creation. This makes it suitable as an introduction to recent works on quantum field theories.

Particle Physics Reference Library

Particle Physics Reference Library PDF Author: Herwig Schopper
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 3030382079
Category : Heavy ions
Languages : en
Pages : 632

Book Description
This first open access volume of the handbook series contains articles on the standard model of particle physics, both from the theoretical and experimental perspective. It also covers related topics, such as heavy-ion physics, neutrino physics and searches for new physics beyond the standard model. A joint CERN-Springer initiative, the "Particle Physics Reference Library" provides revised and updated contributions based on previously published material in the well-known Landolt-Boernstein series on particle physics, accelerators and detectors (volumes 21A, B1,B2,C), which took stock of the field approximately one decade ago. Central to this new initiative is publication under full open access

Book Description
A comprehensive guide to the theory, practice and applications of optical tweezers, combining state-of-the-art research with a strong pedagogic approach.

Biological Water

Biological Water PDF Author: Gertz I. Likhtenshtein
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 3030825035
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 523

Book Description
This book embraces all physiochemical aspects of the structure and molecular dynamics of water, focusing on its role in biological objects, e.g. living cells and tissue, and in the formation of functionally active structures of biological molecules and their ensembles. Water is the single most abundant chemical found in all living things. It offers a detailed look into the latest modern physical methods for studying the molecular structure and dynamics of the water and provides a critical analysis of the existing literature data on the properties of water in biological objects. Water as a chemical reagent and as a medium for the formation of conditions for enzymatic catalysis is a core focus of this book. Although well suited for active researchers, the book as a whole, as well as each chapter on its own, can be used as fundamental reference material for graduate and undergraduate students throughout chemistry, physics, biophysics and biomedicine.

Modern Nuclear Physics

Modern Nuclear Physics PDF Author: Alexandre Obertelli
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 9811622892
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 739

Book Description
This textbook is a unique and ambitious primer of nuclear physics, which introduces recent theoretical and experimental progresses starting from basics in fundamental quantum mechanics. The highlight is to offer an overview of nuclear structure phenomena relevant to recent key findings such as unstable halo nuclei, superheavy elements, neutron stars, nucleosynthesis, the standard model, lattice quantum chromodynamics (LQCD), and chiral effective theory. An additional attraction is that general properties of nuclei are comprehensively explained from both the theoretical and experimental viewpoints. The book begins with the conceptual and mathematical basics of quantum mechanics, and goes into the main point of nuclear physics – nuclear structure, radioactive ion beam physics, and nuclear reactions. The last chapters devote interdisciplinary topics in association with astrophysics and particle physics. A number of illustrations and exercises with complete solutions are given. Each chapter is comprehensively written starting from fundamentals to gradually reach modern aspects of nuclear physics with the objective to provide an effective description of the cutting edge in the field.
