Excerpt from A Practical Treatise on Street or Horsepower Railways, Their Location, Construction and Management With General Plans and Rules for Their Organization and Operation: Together With Examinations as to Their Comparative Advantages Over the Omnibus System; And Inquiries as to Their Value for Investment; Including Copies of Municipal Ordinances Relating Thereto Having received numerous enquiries from various parts of the United States and Europe, in relation to the construction and general operation of Street Railways, I have been induced to publish the following pages, which I trust will be found practically useful to the Engineer, Contractor, Shareholder, and Director of Street Railways, as well as to the Authorities of those Cities whose streets are about to be occupied by them. I have been compelled to omit estimates of cost of construction, as the price of materials varies in different localities; this, however, with Engineers, will be but a simple work of calculation. I have endeavored to confine myself as much as possible to such practical information as, during my own experience in the construction of works of this nature, I have considered most important, and in this effort I have been materially aided by the kind advice of my friend, Strickland Kneass, Esq., whose authority in such matters is undisputed.
