Book Description
This study examines Samuel Barber's Sonata for Cello and Piano, Op. 6, a notable part of the repertoire for cello and piano, and American music in general. Beginning with an overview of Barber's life, further chapters include a formal analysis of the piece, a guide for the cellist's approach in performance, and a discussion of the piece in the context of nationality in the 1930's. Barber's sonata is revealed to be a neo-romantic work, combining aspects of 19th-century romanticism and 20th-century modernism. The role of the cello is found to be lyrical and often vocal, a typical quality in Barber's music in general, the composer himself being a trained singer. Pertaining to nationality, Barber is distinguished from figures (such as Aaron Copland) who embraced a representative role in American art music, and is viewed instead as an individual American who composed from personal instinct and desire for authentic expression.

Samuel Barber's Piano Sonata Op. 26
Author: Ioannis Iliadis
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781339743844
Category : Harmonic analysis (Music)
Languages : en
Pages : 25
Book Description
Abstract: This paper will serve as a practical performance guide for students and young pianists who wish to explore this sonata, and will provide knowledge that will help them shape their own interpretation. Interpretations vary from pianist to pianist and this paper will not propose a unique interpretation of Barber Sonata Op. 26. Instead, I will analyze the piece step by step, so as to point out the harmonic and melodic material which should be followed in order to understand the structure of the music. With specific technical advice and aesthetic suggestions both from recordings and my own experience I will try to elucidate the very thick texture and give another perspective of the piece. A brief sketch of the composer biography will serve to establish an understanding of the historical background of the piece. Also, a stylistic analysis of the piece will be made through a study of the score. The original recording is the one by Vladimir Horowitz, whose relationship with Barber could absolutely be the subject of a whole new research project.

Sonata for Cello & Piano, Op. 6. Schirmer. 1936
Samuel Barber
Author: Barbara B. Heyman
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0199879893
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 605
Book Description
Samuel Barber (1910-1981) was one of the most important and honored American composers of the twentieth century. Writing in a great variety of musical forms--symphonies, concertos, operas, vocal music, and chamber music--he infused his works with poetic lyricism and gave tonal language and forms new vitality. His rich legacy includes such famous compositions as the Adagio for Strings, the orchestral song Knoxville: Summer of 1915, three concertos, and his two operas, the Pulitzer Prize-winning Vanessa and Antony and Cleopatra, a commissioned work that opened the new Metropolitan Opera House at Lincoln Center. Generously documented by letters, sketchbooks, original musical manuscripts, and interviews with friends, colleagues and performers with whom he worked, this is the first book to cover Barber's entire career and all of his compositions. The biographical material on Barber is closely interspersed with a discussion of his music, displaying Barber's creative processes at work from his early student compositions to his mature masterpieces. Heyman also provides the social context in which this major composer grew: his education, how he built his career, the evolving musical tastes of American audiences, his relationship to musical giants like Serge Koussevitzky, and the role of radio in the promotion of his music. A testament to the significance of the new Romanticism, Samuel Barber stands as a model biography of an important American musical figure.
