Visually Impaired: a Practical Guide

Visually Impaired: a Practical Guide PDF Author: Andrew Martinez
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 254

Book Description
The purpose of this book is to provide practical information that is directly applicable to the lives of individuals with visual impairments. This book brushes aside abstract talk on the subject and focuses on concrete issues that are common to people who are visually impaired. Throughout the book, I draw on mainly two types of information to give the reader a more holistic view on how to tackle these different issues. The first type of information can be called objective, and consists of portraying a factual snapshot of what sort of information and resources are available for the visually impaired. This includes information on what kind of assistive technology is available, procedures to get accommodations in school, federal aid programs, and more. The second type of information can be called subjective, and consists of providing valuable insight learned from many years of experience with being visually impaired. For example, what accommodations can work best in the classroom, tips for interacting with others, drawbacks associated with certain pieces of technology, and more. These two types of information work together to provide a more nuanced perspective on tackling different issues relating to being visually impaired, and can be a useful guiding hand in the reader's own journey. Chapters Chapter 1: Assistive Technology Chapter 2: Early Education Chapter 3: College Chapter 4: Life After School Chapter 5: The Social World

The Routledge Handbook of Visual Impairment

The Routledge Handbook of Visual Impairment PDF Author: John Ravenscroft
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1351618792
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 472

Book Description
The Routledge Handbook of Visual Impairment examines current debates as well as cross-examining traditionally held beliefs around visual impairment. It provides a bridge between medical practice and social and cultural research drawing on authentic investigations. It is the intention of this Handbook to provide an opportunity to engage with academic researchers who wish to ensure a coherent and rigorous approach to research construction and reflection on visual impairment that is in collaboration with, but sometimes is beyond, the medical realm. This Handbook is divided into ten thematic areas in order to represent the wide range of debates and concepts within visual impairment. The ten themes include: cerebral visual impairment; education; sport and physical exercise; assistive technology; understanding the cultural aesthetics; socio-emotional and sexual aspects of visual impairment; orientation, mobility, habitation, and rehabilitation; recent advances in "eye" research and sensory substitution devices; ageing and adulthood. The 27 chapters that explore the social and cultural aspects of visual impairment can be taken and used in a variety of different ways in order to promote research and generate debate among practitioners and scholars who wish to use this resource to inform their practice in supporting and developing positive outcomes for all.

Routledge Handbook of Media Geographies

Routledge Handbook of Media Geographies PDF Author: Paul C Adams
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1000467031
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 302

Book Description
This Handbook offers a comprehensive overview of media geography, focusing on a range of different media viewed through the lenses of human geography and media theory. It addresses the spatial practices and processes associated with both old and new media, considering "media" not just as technologies and infrastructures, but also as networks, systems and assemblages of things that come together to enable communication in the real world. With contributions from academics specializing in geography and media studies, the Routledge Handbook of Media Geographies summarizes the recent developments in the field and explores key questions and challenges affecting various groups, such as women, minorities, and persons with visual impairment. It considers geographical aspects of disruptive media uses such as hacking, fake news, and racism. Written in an approachable style, chapters consider geographies of users, norms, rules, laws, values, attitudes, routines, customs, markets, and power relations. They shed light on how mobile media make users vulnerable to tracking and surveillance but also facilitate innovative forms of mobility, space perception and placemaking. Structured in four distinct sections centered around "control and access to digital media," "mass media," "mobile media and surveillance" and "media and the politics of knowledge," the Handbook explores digital divides and other manifestations of the uneven geographies of power. It also includes an overview of the alternative social media universe created by the Chinese government. Media geography is a burgeoning field of study that lies at the intersections of various social sciences, including human geography, political science, sociology, anthropology, communication/media studies, urban studies, and women and gender studies. Academics and students across these fields will greatly benefit from this Handbook.
