Book Description
Excerpt from A Plea for the Golden Rule Are you courageous enough to hear both sides of a question that the Council of Women for Home Missions has thought worthy of study? Are you willing to concede that no just conclusions can be reached until both sides are heard? Are you sufficiently broad-minded to include all people in the scope of your application of the Golden Rule of our Savior and Lord, - not excepting even Latter Day Saints? Are you willing to cast aside and repudiate the old spirit of bigotry that led the Jews to condemn Jesus unheard on the ground that no good could come out of despised Nazareth? If you can answer these questions affirmatively, we beg of you to read the following pages. If you can not answer them affirmatively, there is all the more need that you should read them and heed also the divine injunction, "Ye must be born again" About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Golden Rule, or the Book for All God and the welfare of his neighbor, all being under the fatal necessity, of learning the art of governing, by an experience that proves often prejudicial to their subjects. For if subjects notice, that the divine authority, invested in Superiors assumes so many forms and changes they say, that their faith is too much tried that they cannot accommodate them selves to every kind of government, and thus show themselves less ready to obey and to carry the yoke of the religious life. It can be no light thing, however, to see the husband Whom you accepted as a divine gift, first tarn ish then corrupted, and, finally degraded into a thing so mean, as to reflect nothing but dishonor upon the divine giver. Book Description
Excerpt from The Golden Rule: Inaugural Lecture Delivered Before the University of Pennsylvania November Eighteenth, 1900 Gratefully appreciating the peculiar honor done me by the Provost and Trustees of the University of Pennsylvania in inviting me to deliver the introductory address in the Lectureship in Christian Ethics, it is appropriate that in this inaugural address I should outline the purpose, the range, and the spirit of the Lectureship, and the qualification for the Lecturer. I. Purpose of the Lectureship. - And, first, the Purpose of the Lectureship. This purpose is not to trace the history of the various ethical theories; this is already admirably done in our own noble University. Nor is it the purpose to teach theology, whether natural, Biblical, or ecclesiastical. But the purpose of this Lectureship is to teach Christian Ethics; that is to say, the practical application of the precepts and behaviour of Jesus Christ to everyday life. And this is the greatest of the sciences. It is a great thing to known astronomy; for it is science of mighty orbs, stupendous distances, majestic adjustments in time and space. It is a great thing to know biology; for it is the science of living organisms - of stating, growth, health, movements, life itself. It is a great thing to know law; for it is the science of legislation, government, equity, civilization. It is a great thing to know philosophy; for it is the science of men and things.
