Excerpt from A Plea for Liberty of Conscience: And Against Libertinism of Conscience in the Professing Society of Friends God is a pure spirit of justice and truth, and an, by inventing names of praise to please himself, does not please God by that sensual, earthly, and evil spirit. God has ever declared his in dependence of man, and also man's duty for which he was made, not for man to rob God of his dominion, but to live of his justice and truth. Paul asks, Who hath been the Lord's counsellor i for, if any favor has been received by God of man, He is just and will recompense him again. Who then can say he has helped God, or his father has helped him and his son shall do him a favor? Such doctrine teaches the grace of men. Then from whence comes the doctrine of progression in the professed Christian religion, seeing the Lord saith, beside me there is no Saviour. Invention profos seth that God has been waiting for the Son to perfect what the Father has left undone, and that the child ren yet unborn must have the honor of Onward! On war'd! Glorifying the progression from generation to generation; with this proud attery, that God is work ing on the world of mind as he did in the beginning. These inventors would insinuate that God, who is nu changeable in spirit, is about to change the world of mind into God's mind; this is John Jackson's profos sional philosophy, which he attaches to Jesus, saying, he found the treasure in the soul itself.
