New Strategies in Locust Control
Author: S. Krall
Publisher: Birkhäuser
ISBN: 3034892020
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 487
Book Description
In the late eighties large-scale control operations were carried out to control a major desert locust upsurge in Africa. For the first time since the banning of organochlorine pesticides these operations relied mainly on non-persistent pesticides such as organophosphates and pyrethroids. The amount of pesticides sprayed and the area covered were probably the highest in the history of locust control and raised criticism with respect to efficacy, economic viability and environmental impact. As a consequence, applied research into the problem was intensified, both at the national and the international level, with the goal of finding new and environmentally sound approaches and solutions to locust and grasshopper control. Emphasis was laid on developing new control agents and techniques.

Living on the Edge
Author: Le Zwarts
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 9004278133
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 564
Book Description
'Living on the Edge' examines the function of the Sahel region of Africa as an important wintering area for long-distance migrant birds. It describes the challenges the birds have to cope with – climate change, of course, and rapid man-made habitat changes related to deforestation, irrigation and reclamation of wetlands. How have all these changes affected the birds, and have birds adapted to these changes? Can we explain the changing numbers of breeding birds in Europe by changes in the Sahel, or vice versa? Winner of the BB/BTO Best Bird Book Award 2010 The Jury commented: "It is a tremendous book in every department. It marks a step-change in our knowledge of the ecology of this critically important region in the European-African migration system and of the many species (familiar to us on their breeding grounds) that winter there. The authors combine the latest scientific information with vivid descriptions of landscapes and animals. Their book is richly illustrated with large numbers of drawings, maps and photographs by acclaimed experts. The wealth of coloured graphics has been particularly well thought out and encourages readers to delve into the figures and learn more about the region, rather than having the (all-too-common) opposite effect. Summing up, the jury praises not just the high quality of the texts, the information and the illustrations, but also the sheer pleasure of reading the book: "One of the key attributes of a good book is to be able to grip the reader's attention and transport him or her to another place. We feel confident that [Living on the edge] will have that effect."

Field Manual of Techniques in Invertebrate Pathology
Author: Lawrence A. Lacey
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1402059310
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 852
Book Description
The basic tools include chapters on the theory and practice of application of microbial control agents (MCAs) (Section I), statistical considerations in the design of experiments (Section II), and three chapters on application equipment and strategies (Section III). Section IV includes individual chapters on the major pathogen groups (virus, bacteria, microsporidia, fungi, and nematodes) and special considerations for their evaluation under field conditions. This section sets the stage for subsequent chapters on the impact of naturally occurring and introduced exotic pathogens and inundative application of MCAs. Twenty-three chapters on the application and evaluation of MCAs in a wide variety of agricultural, forest, domestic and aquatic habitats comprise Section VII of the Field Manual. In addition to insect pests, the inclusion of mites and slugs broadens the scope of the book.

An Introduction to Arthropod Pest Control
Author: J. R. M. Thacker
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 9780521567879
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 342
Book Description
Arthropod pests are responsible for huge annual losses in global crop production and for transmitting a number of infectious diseases. The control of such pests is therefore of the utmost importance. An Introduction to Arthropod Pest Control provides an up-to-date, detailed overview of current approaches to pest control including chemical pest control, the use of biological and biorational control agents, as well as the latest developments in biotechnology. The book specifically emphasises the techniques available for controlling pests using examples of crop pests, animal pests, and pests that transmit disease, from a wide range of countries. The book is intended as a standard introductory text for undergraduate and postgraduate students in the fields of pest control, entomology, crop protection, and agricultural and environmental sciences. It is also aimed at professional pest control practitioners and government employees working in extension services.
