Philippine Sanctuary

Philippine Sanctuary PDF Author: Bonnie M. Harris

Category : Jewish refugees

Pages : 328

Book Description
"Of the many refugee trails filled with stateless Jews fleeing Europe during the decades of the Nazi Regime, the odyssey of Cantor Joseph Cysner's escape from Hamburg to Poland to the Philippines stands unique. Joseph escaped the fate of thousands of refugees held at border-camps along the German-Polish border in 1938 and joined hundreds of European refugee Jews ultimately saved from destruction between 1937 and 1941 by little known rescue plans in the East Asian Community of the Philippines. His rescue by Commonwealth officials President Manual Quezon and High Commissioner Paul V. McNutt, and American Jewish businessmen and leaders in Manila, illuminates their heroic efforts in organizing selection and sponsorship programs that overcame limits imposed by the US and other countries during the refugee crisis and heroically saved as many souls as they could before war intervened. Even though it too was ill-fated by the Japanese invasion, Quezon's remarkable offer demonstrated what could be accomplished when nation's leaders were willing to put aside political agendas to act in the universally noble cause of saving human lives. By opening their doors to the refugees, the Filipinos also opened their hearts and gave them a new homeland. Joseph Cysner's personal story of refuge in the Philippines and the vibrant Jewish community that arose there weaves itself throughout the humanitarian efforts to aid the persecuted with a sanctuary in the Pacific. This book resurrects these important events from historical oblivion"--

My Odyssey with Donna

My Odyssey with Donna PDF Author: Jose Peczon
Publisher: Fulton Books, Inc.
ISBN: 1637106033
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 309

Book Description
The first six chapters of this book are autobiographical. The first chapter describes a tragedy that occurred to the family of the author when he was fifteen years old. In the subsequent chapters, he describes his roots, early childhood, experiences during the World War II, and how he started a career in medicine at a very young age. In the seventh chapter, he poignantly describes how he met his future partner for life. For the rest of the book, he describes the journey they took together, starting with their training at the Philippine General Hospital in Manila where they met, their five-year participation in the US State Department Exchange Visitor Program for further training, and their return to their homeland with an intent to serve the country of their birth. Finding themselves to seem like foreigners in their home country, they decided to return to America, where they were able to achieve a level of success in life that they never thought possible, even in their wildest dreams. The author, encouraged and supported by his loving wife, went on to become a leading advocate of intraocular lens implantation during cataract operations in Massachusetts, despite vigorous opposition from leading Boston ophthalmologists. His reputation as a young ophthalmologist at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary in Boston led to his recruitment to practice his specialty in a small rural city, Greenfield, Massachusetts, where he was given a much-coveted deferment from serving in Vietnam. While achieving prominence in ophthalmological circles in Massachusetts, he never forgot his home country. He periodically visited his old alma mater to share his knowledge and experience with his younger colleagues.

Book Description
Philippine Odyssey. These stories cover almost thirty years residence in the Philippines. The contents of the book stand alone and require no comments or introduction. I consider this quite ordinary life of mine as a relatively big adventure. Certainly it has been far more exotic and fraught with circumstances I would never have experienced if I had remained in my native England. It gave me opportunities to try my hand at activities I would not otherwise have even contemplated. Although my efforts have been rewarded with little success I have had a life of adventure and varied experiences. Whether these experiences have added to my character I'm not sure. But for sure I know they haven't done anything to alter my very introverted personality for the better. I came to the Philippines with a reasonable amount of capital saved month by month from my tax free salary of the previous five years working in Saudi Arabia. I have added little in my work and efforts to that initial nest egg but at least it has not in all these years depreciated. I have been able to maintain the status quo I started with, though I'm not sure I have increased it along with increases in living standards. Looking back, I have been very happy here in the Philippines. As well as variety in business I have had much variety on the personal level. Here also success also scarcely flowed freely, but at least my experiences even on this personal level have been, I am sure, far superior than they would have been if I had remained in England.
