This thesis presents a simulation and performance evaluation analysis of the various routing protocols that have been proposed for the Mobile Ad Hoc Network (MANET) environment using the Network Simulator-2 (NS-2) tool. Many routing protocols have been proposed by the academic communities for possible practical implementation of a MANET in military, governmental and commercial environments. Four (4) such routing protocols were chosen for analysis and evaluation: Ad Hoc On-demand Distance Vector routing (AODV), Dynamic Source Routing (DSR), Destination-Sequenced Distance Vector routing (DSDV) and Optimized Link State Routing (OLSR). NS-2 is developed and maintained by the University of Southern California's Information Sciences Institute (ISI). Leveraging on NS-2 s simulation capabilities, the key performance indicators of the routing protocols were analyzed such as data network throughput, routing overhead generation, data delivery delay as well as energy efficiency or optimization. The last metric is explored, especially due to its relevance to the mobile environment. Energy is a scare commodity in a mobile ad hoc environment. Any routing software that attempts to minimize energy usage will prolong the livelihood of the devices used in the battlefield. Three important mobility models are considered, namely, Random Waypoint, Manhattan Grid, and Reference Point Group Mobility. The application of these three models will enhance the realism of simulation to actual real life mobility in an urban or military setup scenario. The performance of the routing protocols in varied node density, mobility speed as well as loading conditions have been studied. The results of the simulation will provide invaluable insights to the performance of the selected routing protocols. This can serve as a deciding factor for the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) in their selection of the most suitable routing protocols tailored to their specific needs.

Master's Thesis from the year 2018 in the subject Engineering - Computer Engineering, grade: 3.71, Cyprus International University, language: English, abstract: In this thesis, three Wireless Sensor Networks – Ad-hoc On-Demand Distance Vector, Dynamic Source routing protocol and Optimized Link State routing protocol have been simulated and compared in typical IoT scenarios. Their performance was evaluated using three performance metrics and then they were compared; the performance metrics are Routing Overhead, Average End to End Delay and Throughput. Different number of nodes with different percentages of mobile nodes were analyzed. Specifically, number of nodes analyzed were 20, 40, 60 and 70 with the number of mobile nodes 10, 15 and 20 using OPNET while with NS 3 20, 60 and 100 nodes were analyzed. For each of the number of nodes, all the number of mobile nodes were evaluated. The routing protocols were analyzed using the OPNET Simulation Software and NS-3and the environment size for the simulation was 1000m by 1000m. IoT has continue to grow bigger since from its inception. Many mobile devices are now available, the internet and its application have only grown bigger and better. As IoT is continually growing, so also is the complexity, as a result issues pertaining routing have also increased. Many researches have been made in attempt to proffer solutions that will either minimize or eliminate these routing issues. Different routing protocols have been designed with different specifications for different applications of the IoT. Also, attempts have been made to implement routing protocols of other types of networks in the IoT.

Mobile Ad hoc Networks (MANETs) are of much interest to both the research community and the military because of the potential to establish a communication network in any situation that involves emergencies. Examples are search-and-rescue operations, military deployment in hostile environment, and several types of police operations. One critical open issue is how to route messages considering the characteristics of these networks. The nodes act as routers in an environment without a fixed infrastructure, the nodes are mobile, the wireless medium has its own limitations compared to wired networks, and existing routing protocols cannot be employed at least without modifications. Over the last few years, a number of routing protocols have been proposed and enhanced to solve routing in MANETs. It is not clear how those different protocols perform under different environments. One protocol may be the best in one network configuration but the worst in another. This thesis describes a study of those protocols that are best from a DoD perspective. These wireless mobile networks were simulated under different mobility and traffic scenarios to evaluate their performance. The results showed which protocols performed better under several relevant scenarios and exposed a number of design flaws.

Mobile wireless ad-hoc networks (MANETs) are being designed to be a key element in future battlefield communications, as well as a supplement to cellular networks. As a consequence of rapid changes in the topology of the network, routing packets in MANETs is a challenging task that has attracted considerable attention. However a comprehensive performance evaluation of routing protocols remains an open problem. This dissertation proposes a novel methodology for the performance evaluation of routing protocols for MANETs. The method is based on a "Divide and Conquer" approach and it provides a systematic and disciplined way to evaluate the performance of routing protocols. The full routing system is decomposed into components (subsystems). Performance models are developed for each component. Then, the performance model of the full system is the interconnection of the performance models of the components. The component based approach makes practical the performance evaluation of routing protocols, by allowing researchers to reuse a subset of the previous developed models to evaluate the performance of new ideas.

This thesis presents a simulation and analysis of the Ad Hoc On- Demand Distance Vector Routing Protocol (AODV) for mobile ad hoc network (MANET) environments using the Network Simulator 2 (NS2) tool. AODV is being suggested for possible implementation in the Joint Tactical Radio System (JTRS) for the United States military. Utilizing an AODV model resident in NS2, the simulation focuses on key performance parameters that include the packet delivery fraction, routing loss, buffer loss, total loss, throughput and goodput. The AODV node movement and traffic connection files have been generated to measure the network performance for a given environment using specific parameters. The results reported in this thesis indicate that the network environment size, packet rate and offered load are critical to the network performance. Node velocity played a minimal role in affecting the overall network performance.
