Background and AimsTreatment of children with acute ischemic stroke with tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) or endovascular thrombectomy requires timely diagnosis. Widespread diagnostic delay prompted pediatric centers in the United States to develop multidisciplinary teams to respond emergently to children with acute-onset focal neurologic deficits. We describe here a decrease in the time to diagnosis of children presenting to the emergency department (ED) with acute-onset focal neurologic deficits after the establishment of a pediatric stroke alert system.MethodClinical and demographic information were reviewed for children who presented to the Boston Children's Hospital ED with acute-onset focal neurologic deficits for 2.5 years before and after the implementation of a stroke alert system.ResultsSixty-eight children presented with acute-onset focal neurologic deficits after implementation of a stroke alert system. Thirteen children presented with such symptoms before establishment of a stroke alert system.
